Secret Codes – Misplaced Landmarks – Hidden Clues – Actual Places

Earlier than Jake’s grandfather died, he was on the path of a centuries-old thriller. And he has entrusted that thriller to Jake, abandoning a set of hidden codes, riddles, maps, and different clues that lead Jake and his mates on a scavenger hunt into the guts of Colorado’s wild and rugged Rocky Mountain Nationwide Park.

Via twists and turns, the thriller unfolds whereas Jake, Amber, and Wes find out about survival expertise, pure historical past, integrity, character, and friendship.

Whereas tenting in Rocky Mountain Nationwide Park, they uncover they don’t seem to be the one ones on this quest. An elusive shadow group is shut on their heels.

    Couldn’t put it down!
I bought this book for my 12 year old son who doesn’t see himself as a reader. However, I wanted to read it myself because of the great reviews here, and I enjoyed it! I didn’t want to put it down and picked it up again as soon as my work was done. One of the difficulties with finding good books for young adults is that many of the adventure-type books also include demons, dragons, demigods, killing, and other items I’d rather not have my children reading. These National Park books don’t contain any of the fantasy world – instead, they are centered around adventures in the wild outdoors – and it turns out those fantasy elements aren’t necessary to keep young adults engaged.I also loved that the kids in the story are big on outdoor adventure and that they’re unplugged – they don’t spend time on their phone, or with video games, etc – in the beginning, the author talks about that a little bit, but throughout the story, you see that the kids spend their free time playing card games, fly fishing, etc. Also there’s one main boy, his cousin (male) and family friend (female). I like that the author created her to be a leader, that the boys have to keep up with her instead of the other way around. I feel like this makes the book a good read for either boys or girls. I also feel like all 3 kids are great role models.I will be purchasing the rest of the series for my sons to read!

Great book for my reluctant reader!
Our 9 year old son and I read this together and we both enjoyed it so much! It is an engaging story and I love the details about the park. It made us both want to go visit! We have read through book four now and are so excited to read book number five! I tell anyone looking for an engaging series for their young reader to give this series a try!

    Rocky Mountain
I loved this book so much. My son is a rising 4th grader so I got it for him. I’m also a teacher so I started to read it and was hooked! This book is very well written and keeps your attention with each chapter. This would be great addition to a 5th grade library or for a higher reading group to get fluency practice and comprehension. You can also go to the website of the series and the author has a vocabulary list to go with each book to help you out with tier 2 or 3 words. Take my word get it and I bet you yourself will read it and not put it down. Also it has more information about the real places they visit in the book in the back!

    Good book!
Terrific book and the story line kept my interest and I’m 48 years old! but 2 pages are messed up. The ink is blurred on a number of the lines and can hardly be read.

    Amazing book club series!
As a homeschool mom of a 7th grade son, I’m always looking for books that creates fun conversation starters for our book club. This book does that and more! My son loves these books, saying that the kids in the books are relatable to him and his friends. He enjoys the adventure that this series brings and I love that they learn about National parks without even realizing they are learning! We have now read books 1-5 and I’m going to say, they just keep getting better!!!

Great to read aloud with grandson!
I purchased this for our grandson’s 9th birthday. Once we started reading it was hard to put down. He loved the mysteries and trying to figure them out before we got to the end. I am now checking to be sure our library has them available. This was a fun book that gave appreciation for the outdoors and our national parks. He was reading Harry Potter books on his kindle, but put them down for our read aloud together time and we both enjoyed every page.

Excellent Mystery Outdoor Collection for My 9-Year Old
We’ve read the first two of the three book series and are halfway through the third (I understand the author plans to keep going). My daughter and I are doing you-read-a-page, I-read-a-page sessions almost daily and enjoying it.For kids, this is a clever mystery series that introduces the grander of three different national parks and a decades old puzzle being tackled by three young teens who are vacationing with their families. The parks are given good description (I’ve been to two of the three) in a way that should interest young readers in the wonders of natural America. The mystery is plausible to young readers with enough mystery to be engaging. The author also pivots between the 1800’s, when the object in question became hidden and pursued, and present day. The present day is triggered when the recently deceased grand-father of one of the three adventurers leaves him a host of clues (some of them hidden in the national parks) that he and his two companions are following in pursuit of solving the mystery. Adding to the suspense of the mystery, it seems that they are being followed by nefarious pursuers who are after the same item they seek. For adults, the writing is age appropriate, but not simplistic. I am enjoying reading this with my daughter and the story hasn’t bored or become repetitive. It has a good literary flow and is well crafted. Perfect for how she and I are tackling the series.

My 11 year old is an avid reader. We picked this up for him. He read it in a day. Said he loved it, “especially the 1880s parts.” Then he said that the author was tricky because he makes it so that you “have” to buy the next book. I asked why. He said it’s because each subsequent book has clues to solving the mystery. Long story short, he then asked if we could buy the next book!
