Transformed my students writing!
As a first year, third grade teacher, trying to wrap my head around teaching 8/9 year olds how to write quality work was daunting. But TWR gives great techniques and strategies to get students OF ALL AGES writing! I will never not use TWR in my classroom!

Amazing book and resource
This book is fantastic and I highly HIGHLY recommend the courses that are available through their website. As a literacy teacher this is amazing, but this year I’m teaching math and WOW the STEM resources are incredible. You really can figure out ways to incorporate writing in the math class that feels natural and I can’t wait to see how my students grow and are able to organize their thinking. Think about how much tests are now asking our students to READ in math and then how much they need to WRITE about their thinking. So often kids can’t explain to me, and this book (The Hochman Method) breaks it down step by step, showing me how to support all my learners. I have taken 3 courses now and they are all valuable, but by FAR the STEM course was amazing and really shows how we all need to take on literacy development for our students, not leaving it to the ELA teachers. This book and the courses and the online resources library are amazing and transformational!

The best book on Education I have ever read. excellent overview of Macro and Micro -instruction
This is hands down the best education book I have ever read. Most education books are full of high level fluff on the Macro level. Build a bond with students have rigor but the fail to explain how to get the skills on the basic micro level. The book gives a good overview on why the book works and then it gives at least a dozen different activities on how help students with their writting. Things such as sentence starters out of order words find the fragment fix the grammer sentence etc. This books is great for all ages and abilities.

Helpful guide to filling in writing curriculum gaps, but…
I’ve been teaching middle school ELA for 7 years. Teaching essay-writing is always a struggle for students and for me. My district has followed a certain writing program for the last 10 or so years, with varying degrees of success. My area has a high population of English language learners, so this is a factor to consider when planning writing lessons.I really appreciate the early chapters on explicitly teaching concepts such as complete sentences vs. fragments and sentence expansion. I do see the value in the single-paragraph and multi-paragraph outlines. However, this is not sufficient for the planning process for secondary grades. Out of the whole book, there was only about a page dedicated to teaching students how to use evidence and cite sources correctly, when this is one of the big struggles with teaching writing to middle schoolers. The SPO and MPO do not adequately address separating students’ own elaboration from their sources, in my opinion. I was hoping for tips that are simpler than some of the very complicated planning sheets we are currently teaching students, but not quite this simple. All in all, this book is a great resource when it comes to teaching the foundational writing skills that are so lacking in many upper grade students, and there are also many valuable resources when it comes to differentiating. I did appreciate that elementary and secondary grades were addressed in every section of the book, with plenty of examples. This will be helpful in supplementing my current lesson plans and writing curriculum.

The techniques are very practical, student friendly and I have used this text for teaching Year 7 Film Podcasts, Year 8 Response paragraphs to the novel, Year 9 Public Essay (Internet article) on Fantasy and as preparation for the Year 10 Analytical Essay in response to the novel. A copy of this text should be used in every school!

This book is an eye opener to discover why some students are having difficulty improving their writing. It is a hard skill to teach since there are many skills to build at the same time. I have gained new insight and ideas. The focus though is for students in junior grades and above.

***This is my first Amazon review, as I don’t usually write them, so let it be a testament to how excellent TWR 2.0 is***As a teacher of students with high literacy needs, the 1st ed. of TWR was already a godsend! It empowered me with the skills to integrate writing instruction alongside the intense demands of the secondary curriculum. It not only transformed my students’ writing development but also how they saw themselves as learnersâI am forever grateful to TWR.Given how ‘revolutionary’ (pun intended) the 1st ed. was, I questioned what the 2nd ed. could offer. However, just from flicking through, it’s clear that this new release is far from simply an extension of the 1st ed. TWR literally JUMPS from the page in this technicolour edition filled with student examples and teacher tips.Calling this a ‘2nd ed.’ does an injustice to what the new release truly provides: the Hochman Method remastered. Not only has the sequence been reorganised, but there are NEW STRATEGIES to scaffold students’ writing development further. To any school or educator utilising TWR, this new release is ESSENTIAL to ensure the method’s full potential can come to fruition.
