I am a much better runner now at 60 than I was at 16
This was one of those life changing books. When I first read it back in 1977 the running boom was just starting and Jim Fixx was a big part of it. It certainly changed my life as I have been a runner ever since. I remember how excited I was to find out about this new world of running I was about to become a part of. Running previously had been a misery. In high school track, I had no idea how to train and neither did the coaches. Those were the days of salt tablets, restricted water intake, worn out spiked race flats, gravel tracks, irrational training methods. I am a much better runner now at 60 than I was at 16! The genius of Jim Fixx was being able to present a complete “how to” of running in an era when people had no idea how to begin. His timing was perfect.

Transformative.
I bought this for my adult son. I read this book in the Eighties. It helped me go from unable to run a mile to running many half marathons and a full marathon. Distance running was transformative in my life. Enhanced my physical and my mental health.

One of the best books ever
Read this book decades ago and it has great parts of how running helps psychologically which I can support as running gave and still gives me a great to think about nothing or think out a issue (even at 72). Great advice for running that can be used/transfer to lifes issues. Great book to keep and use as a reference. I do and having hundreds of times.

Best jump start book ever
Jim Fixx’s book is dated. It has information that is quite often questionable. It does not help that for all his evangelizing the many positives of running his passing away while in the middle of a run. The complaints of this book are many and often valid…., but what this book does better than any book I read is get people of all ages to lace up their sneakers [“beginner” runners do not start out with running shoes] and head out the door for their first run in years. While much has been learned since the first printing, this book is matchless in its ability to get people moving, and that was Fixx’s primary concern when he wrote it thirty-four years ago. One of the timeless items offered is his advice for a runner to refer to himself to nonrunners as a jogger. The things like that are timeless. The reader also gets a feel for the author’s person in the pages and that is what makes the book so readable as pointed out by others. If you are a stranger to running or a has been, this book will do wonders for you.Jim Fixx, many thanks to your memory for your finest work.- JKHolman

Required Reading for New Runners
I first bought this book shortly after it came out in the 70’s and used it as a touchstone for all of my running. Through two marathons and hundreds of 5 and 10K runs and races, I’ve used Jim Fixx’s book for guidance. One of the most influential aspects of the book is his advice on training and how hard to train using heart rate to gauge how much effort you are putting forth and your cardiovascular health. It works and I’m still using Jims advice and running daily in my 70’s. If you are considering running as an exercise and lifestyle, this book is a “must read”. You won’t be sorry you bought it.

A classic every runner should read (and own)
I love this book. I read it first when I was a junior in High School. Now, as a 42 year-old runner, I still find Fixx’s word to be inspirational. Although there is much dated (and some inaccurate) information in this book, and despite the fact that the author died of a heart attack, the heart of its message remains the same. Get out and run! It’s good for your body, mind, and soul.

Classic!
This book is the reason I began running in 1978. It’s dated for sure but it changed my life back then and I was glad to replace my long lost copy.

30 odd years ago I was a rubbish runner, I wasn’t even a decent plodder. Every run I did was a major struggle ! Anyway, I was aware of the authors name and saw this book in a library and borrowed it.A year later I was a very good runner and thought nothing of running between 6-10 miles several times a week and began coaching others.2024 I’m making a come back after illness and will be using this book to get me in the right frame of mind & to restart my running from scratch. If you want to take up running or improve your running style , mindset, etc etc then I would highly recommend this book. Good luck !!

Acheté quand j’ai commencé la cap. Une bonne base, un peu trop “US” dans le ton, mais les conseils sont utiles.

I was so upset to have lost my copy of Jim Fixx’s book I had to buy this to replace it. I have read a number of books on various aspects of running, but none of them really excites me. I find newer books tend to have some sort of pseudo-scientific angle on running, be it heart rate, pose, barefoot running, pronation, mitochondrial proliferation, nutritional or osmotic nonsense, and absolutely none of it stands up to scientific cross-examination. Jim Fixx’s book is really about running in general. He did not attempt to make claims that could not be supported by published evidence. The book takes a highly relaxed attitude to running and always left me feeling that I really wanted to get my trainers on and get out there, however short or far, just for the sheer joy of running. I am getting the urge now, just writing this. Sadly people went off running when Jim Fixx died of a heart attack, with the mistaken idea that it was the running that had killed him tragically young. This was not the case, of course, and re-reading this book with the knowledge of what was ultimately going to happen to him gives it an added poignancy.

I took up running this year for the first time – aged 57. After about 6 months running, and completing one half marathon and one ten mile race (slowly!), a friend recommended this book. It was just the right time to read it. Too soon, and you don’t have the experience to relate to the joys and sorrows that Jim Fixx describes. Any later, and bad habits would have set in too firmly. If you have any interest in running, then read this book!
