Life changing book – all pregnant mamas should read
This should not only be required reading for all expecting mamas (and those trying to conceive) it should also be required reading for all midwives and doctors. The information she shares is better and more accurate/researched than everything else out there and unfortunately the standard guidance has not been updated to reflect the recent data she points to. Did you know that the conventional guidance on nutrition during pregnancy is based on studies almost solely done one MEN! This is wild and seems nonsensical really. Her guidance is clear, concise, and easy to follow. Through her work with so many mamas and especially mamas with gestational diabetes she has proved that a healthy real food diet can set you up for a healthy pregnancy (avoiding many of the common complications like gestational diabetes and high blood pressure) and best of all a healthy baby for their whole lives. How amazing is that?! The research on how diet deficiencies can impact a child years into their life or their whole life is just so eye opening. While it might overwhelm or stress some people out to learn some of this information, I think itâs incredible to know we can give this gift to our children by eating foods that will nourish them for a lifetime. Also she shares the information in a way that is nonjudgmental and kind. Iâm so grateful for Lily for getting this information out there and am telling everyone I know to read this (or one of her other books, either for general fertility or those with gestational diabetes).

Very helpful!
As someone who isnât super informed on nutrition and why our bodies need what they need, this book was a lot of great information. I knew a chunk of it, but most of it was very informative since it focuses specifically on what you need during your pregnancy and specifically points out misconceptions. I donât understand why some reviews said that the author was focusing on expensive organic food, or that they suggested it was written in a condescending tone. The book reads like youâre talking to a friend, it blatantly says that anything closer to naturally made is better for you but life isnât a perfect world so do what you can, and it backed everything up with scientific research and studies. It was clear, it was nicely organized, and it wasnât scary to read – people saying it is scary to read are just scared because the author pointed out the realities, which is that certain developmental issues or health concerns occur when too much or too little of a nutrient is present during pregnancy. Donât blame the messenger for informing you instead of refraining from mentioning it. I like the book so far. Itâs very informative. Itâs like the top rated recommended book for pregnancy nutrition. Definitely worth the read.

Researched, cited, easy to read and comprehensive
I wanted to wait until I read the whole book but I just couldnât! Iâm halfway through in just a couple of days and have found âReal food for pregnancyâ so easy to read and brimming with useful, practical information. I love how Lily gives cited sources in her recommendations and compares it to whatâs âgenerally accepted adviceâ and how the general guidelines for pregnant women are typically not well founded. I also love that it not only covers nutrition from food, but has a lot of well researched information on prenatal vitamins, supplements, exercise, the list goes on! Although I genuinely try to eat âhealthyâ Iâm not going to wait until Iâm pregnant to make some changes as suggested in this book. For example, I use Sweet N Low in my morning coffee. Did I know fake sugar provides no useful nutrition, yes. Did I know it can have a negative effect on the bacteria in my gut and âmay impact a childâs propensity for obesity later in lifeâ ?! Sadly, I didnât. So many small changes can be made given the education found in this book. You will not regret buying this book. Do not wait until you are pregnant. Educate yourself now.

Helpful and informative
I thought I went into this book knowing about nutrition- and I still learned SO much. Super helpful and informative in how to get your best nutrition needs in pregnancy, and I feel like it helped me understand nutrition beyond pregnancy as well! The meal plans were great and I am eating better than ever. Iâve always been a picky eater and this helped open my eyes to all the nutrients Iâve been missing that me and my baby needs

Common sense advice thatâs not so common
As someone who is huge into meal prep and healthy eating, I knew I wanted some good advice on how to naturally prepare my body for pregnancy. The advice given sounds simple and seems like common sense (although I found out itâs not so common after reading about what conventional doctors recommend you eat). She includes thorough explanations and research as to why the suggestions are given.I am now 19 weeks pregnant and have had a very smooth pregnancy so far. I often get shocked faces when I share with other Mamaâs that I didnât have morning sickness and am still playing volleyball because of how good I feel. I know part of it is genetics but more so, having a strong body before pregnancy prepped me for a strong body during pregnancy. I know that my body and my babyâs body are being nourished and that Iâm doing the best thing I possibly can for the future of our baby; being a strong Mama and giving them a strong foundation for a lifetime of health!Thank you for an amazing book that I have read three times over and have learned so much from!

Lilyâs book has been such a powerful tool for pregnancy and postpartum. I trust her perspective which comes very a highly researched and referenced background. She has practical advice in language thatâs easy to understand but always based in scientific research and I so appreciate the work she has done for women. There is not enough focus on womenâs health and Lily is doing her part to change that and educate us all!

Well written and researched. Has to be taken with a pinch of salt, however, if outside of America, as some things (practices, statistics, etc.) do not apply.

While the author undoubtedly spent a lot of time and efforts into doing (and selecting) the (often low-quality) research for this book, PLEASE don’t read it if you have or have suffered from an ED in your life. It is littered with vague, judgemental terminology on nutrients, and is very triggering (shouldn’t a professional working with female nutrition acquire some understanding of how to talk about nutrition in a respectful and non-triggering way?). It is also a nerve-wracking read and encourages a number of adjustments that vast swathes of the population simply cannot afford. The underlying message seems to be, if you don’t make these adjustments, you are ultimately a bad mother. The author is also obviously very biased: hell-bent on portraying carbs as some sort of poison and animal-based protein as the cure to all evils. Bacon and sausages are listed among the top sources of protein, above any plant-based protein. The WHO clearly identifies the overconsumption of red, cured and ultra-processed meat as a lead cause of some cancers and cardiovascular diseases: Western populations DO NOT need to be encouraged to eat more of them than they already do, pregnant or not (and no, I am not a vegetarian).I don’t think any of the health benefits resulting from the advice in this book are enough to counterbalance the floods of cortisol reading it sends soaring through your system. Do yourself a favour and invest the money in a nice meal.
