    8 months later, I’m a believer
    In late 2003 I began to think it was time for a change. Being middle aged and approximately 120 lbs over weight(scary), I looked into all the current diets, ie The Zone, Atkins (yuck), Weight Watchers (been there, done that) and settled on South Beach. With a family history of diabetes, stroke, and hypertension, it sounded the most sensible to me and was geared towards my particular eating problems. I started January 15, 2004 and to date I have lost 60 pounds and still counting. Within one month all the tingling in my hands and feet went away. Within 2 months my blood pressure went from 165/110 to 110/80. How’s that for results? The first phase was the hardest but after I settled into the routine of it all, I am happy to say it’s been pretty easy. I don’t wake up tired anymore and have 10X more energy throughtout the day. I excercise 3-5 per week. I eat bread, fruit, whole grain pasta and yes, sweets. I just don’t eat it all on any given day. I try not to have bread and fruit in the same meal. I miss white rice but you can have brown rice in limited quanities. Sometimes I fall off for a party or special event but I’ve learned to get right back on my eating plan the next day! There is no measuring or counting. I do this all day everyday by making choices. I make my own lower carb yogurt and eat fresh fruit and veggies all day long. I feel healthier than I have EVER felt in my life. You avoid high sugar fruits such as pineapple and watermelon. I have almost totally ellimanated processed foods from my diet. Now tell me people, what is so evil about all of this? This eating lifestyle has changed my life. Eight months in and still going strong. This book has helped me save my life and I hope it will help you too.

    Good, but some helpful information is missing
    I have been successfully using the South Beach diet for several years now. I initially lost my law school weight using it. Now, I seem to be in a cycle where I need to start with Phase 1 every summer, I move on to Two and Three and but then a year later, I find myself off the wagon and starting to gain weight, so I go back to Phase 1. But, my weight stays within a 10 lb range, and I haven’t ever come close to where I was. And if I stuck with it, it would work consistently.However, there is some critical information he does not really address that I think is important, particuarily Phase 1. You need to know that your body may initially go into shock when you cut off those carbs in Phase 1. I have experienced severe mood swings, depression, fatigue, headaches, dehydration, constipation, and intense hunger (even when eating a ton of food) within the first few days when my body tries to switch modes. If this happens to you, know that its temporary and will only last a couple of days. Once you get through it, you’ll feel better than ever. Also, I recommend a few strategies to make it tolerable – first, drink LOTS of water – you’re supposed to this generally anyway, but it will make an immediate difference in how you feel. Second, take Citracel with at least one, if not two meals a day. This will help with constipation and cut down on the hunger. Also, although Agatston would probably not like this, I say cheat on the fat if you are feeling really hungry. You may get to the hunger point where you are wondering how your beloved children and/or pets would taste with a little cheese sauce…if so, let yourself have fat until your body makes the switch to running off fat stores instead of incoming carbs. You won’t kill the positive effects of the diet and eventually it won’t be necessary.

    Worked well for me
    I was never obese, usually 10-20 lbs above my ideal weight (160) in my 50s, now 61. After my last blood workup 5 weeks ago, my A1C has been going up, my cholesterol has always been borderline or high (genetics) and I’ve been on meds for high triglycerides. My BP, while always within normal limits has gone to around 134/86. I started the SBD a month ago, went from 179-163 (-16) and my BP has gone down to 117/61 (-approx 20 pts). I tried Atkins years ago, lost weight and gained 50% of it back. The SBD diet has been much better and my wife and I have eaten more fish, roasted veggies, and salad the past month than we have the past 3 years! I have more energy, don’t crave a 2 PM nap and actually looking forward to my next blood workup and checkup. I rarely am hungry and have to catch myself skipping the between meal snacks which take the “edge” off until the next meal. Well worth the effort and I love to cook so the recipes are fairly easy. Our favorite is the “berry smoothie.” While not a big drinker anyway, I haven’t had an alcoholic drink, a slice a bread, potato or regular pasta the past month, even though I could start introducing whole grain pasta, bread now. I just don’t crave it, so I’m staying away from the bad stuff.The SBD book is well written, easy to understand and gives great guidance on what to eat in each phase. Some of the recipes are the best meals we’ve ever eaten, and healthy too. We are discovering new ways to organize our meals, and enjoy healthy eating much more now.

    The book speaks about the development of dieting. The book reveals some of the myths about dieting were made by some institutes. A whole generations suffered adopting what they were with experiments to strict their food intake.The diet itself is based on the high protein diet. The author has no credit for that.The plans are good and can help getting rid off weight

    Diese “Bauchweg”-Diät, die ohne Schlankheits-Pillen auch noch fit und fröhlich macht, krempelt sehr positiv die Essgewohnheiten um. Man ist niemals hungrig und nimmt dabei ab. Vor 5 Jahren nahm ich 10 kg in 4 Wochen damit ab, um für eine Hüftoperation “fit” zu sein. Das hielt 4 Jahre vor.
