Medicine for These Moments
Sy Montgomery writes like a curious, courageous Emily Dickenson. Of Time and Turtles is as intimate as it is insightful, with myth and the magic of these beautiful creatures and a compelling story against the backdrop of when time seemed to stand still, the pandemic. To read Of Time and Turtles is to rekindle our childhood sense of wonder and to believe again.

New appreciation for turtles!
This is a must read (in my opinion) primer on the rescue, rehabilitation and just plain love of turtles. Well written, lots of important detail, similar in style to her book, The Soul of an Octopus (LOVED every page of that book)!

Enlightening and emotional
This book was so well written that it made a nonfiction story feel like a novel. It was full of facts and figures about turtles and ecology and rescues, but it was centered on the stories of the people and turtles. It was easy to get deep into the stories and more than one section brought tears to my eyes. Iâm grateful to know more about turtles and the amazing organizations working so hard to save them.

Endearing Storytelling
I purchased this book on a whim not really knowing what it was about or how it was written. However, I was delightfully surprised by the authorâs ability to draw in the reader and present in simple, conversational style the story of the turtles and their caregivers. As a bonus, there are full color pictures included that share the people and turtles from the story, which adds to the charm of this book. Whether you are a genuine nature lover or not, this book will appeal to your earthly senses and provide smiles you didnât expect.

Turtles don’t feel gratitude
The subject is very interesting and I commend all of the volunteers etc. who work to restore turtles to health, but where this book fails is where the author- throughout the book- imputes human emotions to turtles. Turtles don’t have have concepts like “gratitude”- they are largely solitary animals and there is no process for evolution to have imparted emotions common to highly social animals (like primates) to turtles. I am sure they feel more comfortable after certain procedures but the wishful think of the author- that they understand and appreciate the help they are getting- is just ridiculous. I ended up skimming the book and returning it to the library early.

It’s Sy Montgomery! enough said!
Sy Montgomery manages to write a non-fiction book with all the surprise, intelligence and information PLUS of a novel! In this book, I learned so much about turtles and and never realized how interesting, fascinating they are. I have enjoyed this book so much and would highly recommend it to anyone who is looking for a good read. Also try her book “The Soul of an octopus” which is also great. As are so many of her other books. These two just stood out for me. Being a lover of nature and of animals I can only say “Thank you, Sy! I appreciate your books and all of your efforts on behalf of the creatures of this earth!”
