Clients say

Clients just like the temperature measurement functionality and battery lifetime of the thermometer. Nevertheless, some prospects have reported points with its sturdiness, performance, and shakeability. They point out the glass was damaged on one thermometer and the tip was damaged. Some even have points with motion. Opinions differ on accuracy and readability.

    No issues
It’s nice having the old school thermometer, as opposed to the digital style. Less issues, no batteries. Not sure why it’s asking for the age range of the toy. It’s not a toy, and not something I’d want a kid to be playing with.

    It’s not broken, just tricky!
I’ve seen the negative reviews about the line not going down and I thought I was in the same boat. But I discovered two things: 1) you have to rotate it back and forth to catch the correct angle to actually view the reading. Otherwise it looks maxed out. And 2) it takes way more than a few shakes to get it to go down. Hold on tight and wag that thing for 60 seconds and it will work.I calibrated it against our rapid digital thermometer. It reads a half degree warmer. But readings from this device are more consistent.

VERY difficult to use and not accurate!
If you are looking for a replacement for a mercury thermometer this is NOT it. I have always used mercury thermometers and have no problem whatsoever shaking them down to use. This one you have to shake and shake and shake–more than 20 times every time I tried–to get it down. It is harder to read than mercury thermometers and not as accurate. I did 3 test temperatures vs my mercury one and it was off by 0.2, 0.3 and 0.6 (always low). This is still more accurate than a digital one but the shakedown time/effort was ridiculous. I tried putting it in the holder as some other reviews suggested and it went flying and broke. Not worth the time or the money!

    They’re thermometers!
And they don’t need batteries, don’t have to be switched back and forth from Celsius to Fahrenheit, have relatively large scales and should work fine. That said, I haven’t used either of the two I bought yet. I bought these for home use, but they might be suitable for pros, too.Pros: No batteries, reusable, have a storage case, large display in degrees F and CCons: Way fatter than “old school” mercury thermometersOther: Yes, you can break these. No, the probe (tip) isn’t flexible. However, with just a modicum of care, they should last a lifetime, thereby upsetting the disposable electronics guys and tiny battery sellers.

    Accurate Temperature Reading
This type of oral thermometer is the most accurate type compared to the battery thermometers. It is the only kind I trust to get the true temperature. For me, the battery ones have a different temperature reading within a few seconds of each use. I have been using this type thermometer for 40 years. I was only able to find this type at Rite-Aid, and now Amazon. Great Accuracy.

Good for measuring fever or heat related illness. No ability to measure hypothermia.
Three stars. Ahhight. Well if you want an old style thermometer you may be like me and want one for your field first aid kit such that you don’t have an item which has batteries that can go dead in your kit. So.1. Yes if you leave it in your mouth for an uncomfortably long time it will accurately tell you whether or not you have a fever and how bad it is.2. Yes it’s reasonably easy to read so long as you have it turned just so, such that the liquid column is magnified.3. Yes it holds the liquid in place until swing it around violently such that you have time to turn the thermometer just so and read the temperature.4. It comes with a nifty plastic case (best part of the thermometer in my mind) that protects the thermometer when not in use and aids in holding it.Ok the temperature graduations go fro 95F to 108F. So they’ve got fever and heat stroke covered all the way up to likely to kill you. However, 95F while technically hypothermia is “have a cup of coffee and a blanket and quit whining” hypothermia. I think this is a huge missed opportunity. I suspect that many out there whom want a non-electronic thermometer for measuring body temperature are like me. They want it for a field first aid kit where an electronic thermometer is just a pain in the butt. Now while hypothermia is an outlier of reasons why you want to take someone’s temperature in the home or usual healthcare setting, it is much more common in the wilderness where accidental exposure to extreme cold can happen for a variety of reasons and exposure related deaths are common. As such I need to know when hypothermia is more than an annoyance and represents a true threat, i.e. where the condition is potentially life threatening and extraction/evacuation and aggressive warming measures need to be considered to save someone’s life. As such the range needs to dip into the 80s, around 85 would make me happy. This thermometer outright fails at being able to diagnose the severity of hypothermia. So it’s only three stars.

    Just measure the temperature!
I love the old fashioned simplicity of this product. No batteries to wear out or wonder about… no error messages… just stick it under your tongue and wait a few minutes. Then look at it again. My instinct is to trust German precision engineering and manufacturing. I’ve had one of these for many years, but one time had trouble finding it in my bedroom for awhile. So I decided to get a couple extra to have on hand just in case anything should really happen to the one I had. Grateful to find this product still being sold.
