Amazing book
I havenât played soccer since I was 18. But I would say this is an amazing to get back to it. This gives post season, preseason and during the season weight lifting chart to follow and running drills. If I was to coach I wouldnât mind printing some of the workouts and giving it to them

ok
i guess it’s good if you’re completely lost and want to get started on weight training or something. and i agree with markb57, the exercises offered are rather mediocre… nothing ultimate about it.

Disappointing
DisappointingWhen the Soviets tested potential ski racers the key desirable capability they were looking for was leg strength (60%) with specific focus on explosive power (plyometrics). The remaining attributes tested for were skeletal alignment (posture), flexibility, balance, reaction speed, and range of movement from center core through the hips, knees and feet (joints) – with special attention paid to range of dorsa flexion.BTW neither the Soviets nor anybody else cares about upper body strength other than how it might be tweaked to improve posture or overly trained which might negatively affect flexibility. So you would think a book so targeted to weight training for skiers would focus on lower body strength with special emphasis on enhancing both flexibility and range of motion. And would most certainly reference the bio mechanics required to be a good skier. “The Ultimate Guide to Weight Training” ignores all these frames.Rather it is a standard rehash for a general strength program – it might as well been written and targeted for badminton players and weekend anything.

OK, but not enough soccer specific…..
I’m looking for an up-to-date, soccer specific weight training guide, and checked this out of the library, hoping that it would be my choice. While it gives good generic weight training and programs, to my mind it did not include enough discussion about why the given exercises are recommended for soccer, as opposed to generic weight training, and there is no discussion about integration with other soccer-specific training, like ladder work, stairs, etc. There are a couple of chapters written by soccer trainers, but they seem disjointed form the rest of the book. So it gets a 3, being a decent weight guide, but loses 2 due to lack of soccer specificity.

Generic
The book is quite generic and not very soccer specific. In my view, one could easily go on the Internet and collate a similar exercise program. I am guessing that the author has never worked with a professional soccer team. Hence, he wouldn’t know what modern fitness methods for high level soccer players would entail.

It is a collection of the Most common exercises for general strength conditioning.Nothing specific and nothing ULTIMATE

Great book, a very comprehensive weights and aerobic schedule that is geared specifically to football. It offers a variety of regimes (Endurance, Speed, Pre-Season, In season maintenance) with photo-illustrations on how to do the exercises properly and charts to photocopy and take to the gym.The workouts are varied and I can confirm that after 6 weeks of performing one of the routines, there was very definite improvement in my physique and my performance on the pitch improved as a result. It also provides you with an aerobic schedule to run alongside the weights but you will be looking at doing 1.5 hours a day, 5 days a week if you follow it religiously… but you can cater it to your own lifestyle and, all in all, if you are looking to recover from injury or offset the problems of getting slower and older as wingers become younger and quicker , then this book is for you!

The man in my life was impressed by this. Its very technical and a bit dull looking once you get past the cover. But he is serious about his weight training and thought it was an excellent guide. I suppose we will see in the new year when we ski!!!!!
