Amazing for ideas for prepping food, your pantry, and your run!
All the Run Fast, Eat Slow cookbooks are amazing, with great ideas/recipes for making deliciously healthy, yummy foods to fuel not only your runs, but a healthy livestyle. This book is no different! Even the introduction is full of great information. I love the different morning routines based on the different life stages of Shalane and Elyse and references (and page numbers!) to the recipes they used for their mornings.I often feel like I am reading a choose your own adventure book whenever I open up this cookbook. The recipes are all cross referenced, with sauce recipes, other recipes that go with the current recipe, etc. all having the page number listed. So even though I sit down to read this book page by page, I end up reading this recipe skipping to another section of the book, getting the page number of a different recipe, skipping to that section, etc. It’s truly such a fun experience to read through this cookbook!I am currently training for my first marathon and the breakfast ideas for my training runs have really made a huge difference in my long runs. Based on Shalane’s breakfast routine for pre-kids marathon mornings I discovered that you can eat oatmeal before your long runs. I’d previously avoided oatmeal worrying that it was too heavy for long runs. Man, was I wrong. Using a combination of three different oatmeal recipes in this book I have discovered the perfect morning oatmeal recipe for my long runs. I no longer feel hungry 30 minutes into my run! Additionally, the breakfast ideas and tips for not getting hungry two hours after I eat during the work week have also been super beneficial as I don’t snack on all the junk food at work. I’m able to eat the healthy food I’ve prepared (usually from the weekend, and from the other Run Fast, Eat Slow cookbooks-powerbowls!) and feel well fueled for my after work workouts.I carry this book and the other Run Fast, Eat Slow cookbooks, to my daughter’s practices and events so I can decide on the next week’s meal plan. I recommend these cookbooks to each and every person that I talk with about cooking. The meal plans in the books, the recipes, the prepping ideas, how far in advance you can make the different ingredients, all of it! This cookbook is amazing! I’d definitely get this book if I were you, even if you’re not training for anything. The food is all delicious, healthy, and easy to prepare! You will not be disappointed!

16yo son excited for me to use!
You know these books are good when my 16 year old son grabbed the book out of my hands as soon as I opened the package! He was very excited for me to start making recipes out of this one, since he (and the rest of my family) has / have loved everything I made from the other two cookbooks Shalane and Elyse created.Although only three of the five of us are runners (which is why we purchased the first book in the series, Run Fast Eat Slow), all five of my family members benefit from the information, diet plans, and recipes in these books. If you haven’t already, I urge you to look for the other two books in the series. But this review will concentrate on Rise & Run.As in the past, the book begins with advice on things like morning routines, meal plans, and sample workout plans. Two family members are preparing for a marathon right now, so this was timely for us. Shalane’s stretching routine was inspirational for those of us who rarely take the time to stretch! We read these books as much for this content as for the recipes, and are thankful that the authors share their knowledge in this way.The recipes included are intended to be breakfast or brunch options, but in our house we eat things like this for all of our meals and / or snacks. There are quite a few varieties of Superhero Muffins — both sweet and savory. This may sound repetitious but what I think is that “Superhero Muffins” is just a way of describing different types of make-ahead breakfasts or snacks that can be made in a muffin tin (for individual portions) and eaten quickly as a “first breakfast” before a run or taken with you to eat during the day. And they are different from each other — when I first read that there were two chapters on variations of Superhero Muffins alone, I wondered if the authors had run out of ideas. But quite the contrary, these recipes are probably the ones I will use the most in the book. We have made two of them already! As the main cook in the family, I appreciate all of the work-ahead options mentioned. This time around there are also some quick bread recipes that we will definitely be trying, along with the spreads and toppers! I like that the authors included some main vegetarian/vegan options for brunch (tofu scramble with mushrooms and kale, tempeh breakfast sausage, for example), because two of us are vegetarians, and I felt that vegetarian recipes were a bit lacking in their previous books. We look forward to trying the Anytime Snacks and Packable Treats. Shalane and Elyse do not neglect the athlete’s sweet tooth! I am glad to have more options for desserts — I feel like this is an area where the past two cookbooks have really excelled, and I am happy there are more options in this one.The previous two books have been criticized for using expensive ingredients like almond, hazelnut and spelt flours, or more expensive / hard to find protein options. I never felt that this was a flaw — I want to incorporate a wide variety of different foods into my diet, and I am fortunate to have access to these ingredients. But if this is something that concerns you, just know that this book does seem to follow suit.I will update as I try more, but for now I am very happy with this latest edition to the Run Fast series of cookbooks. Here is hoping that the authors follow this one with a book on lunches and another focusing on dinners!

    Always on my counter
This is the cookbook that’s always at the ready, that has stains from bits of grated carrot and sweet potato on certain pages already, that will fill your house with the grab-and-go breakfasts if you’re back at the office, and that will keep your house filled good-for-you foods so you don’t grab potato chips at 9:30am for a snack (no judgment). I really do love this cookbook and all the cookbooks from this series. From Rise & Run I’ve made the Apple Maple Baked Oatmeal, Everything muffins, the Race Day muffins, the Yam Spice muffins, and the Dark Chocolate Banana muffins. I always have Trail Mix cookies and spiced nuts around. You’ll want to put the Chai Spice in/on everything. And I like how these cookbooks have shaped how I think about food. The recipes are delicious and you feel fueled throughout your runs, or your hectic day. I don’t worry about calories/carbs/fats and I have the peace of mind knowing that I’m eating real food and not additives/fillers. It’s also a cookbook you’ll just sit down and read. The opening chapters explain their ingredients and how to set yourself up for success by having things at the ready. Next-level training is going to inspire you, and mind/body resilience will keep you going (and give you those quotes you want to hang on your wall). Have I said this yet? Buy this cookbook.

Have all their cookbooks and this one did not disappoint. Nutritious pre and post run recipes. Great run tips and extras through out the book. Yummy snack ideas to have on hand for training run days but even the off days when you just need to sastify that snack craving.

I bought all three books by Shalane & Elyse and this one is definitely my favourite. They are all really easy to make and definitely nutritious.I gave birth to a beautiful daughter 4 months ago so time is kind a precious right now. But I do need to take good care of myself since I’m nursing and try to get back in the running game, so good food is priority. The recipes in this book definitely help with that.I love the trail mix breakfast cookies, I eat them all day long. The apple maple oatmeal bake is another favourite I’ve made multiple times already. This feels way better than all the crap I’ve been eating in the last couple of months ’cause I’m hungry all-day-long (seriously, breastfeeding makes me even hungrier than marathon training). So thank you Shalane and Elyse for sharing!
