Helped my 5-year-old (and me!) with emotional regulation
Such a lovely book about how to let go of persistent negative thoughts and catch new ones: silly, brave, kind, calm. The pictures are gorgeous and very engaging. My daughter loved it. She has difficulty with emotional regulation, and within a day this visibly helped her. On the way to the car, she talked about being frustrated and said she was going to catch some new thoughts. She also remarked a bad driver on the road needed to catch some âbe a good driver thoughtsâ â not quite the application but was calm and neutral so I let it slide, hehe. (Also seemed way more inoffensive than my husbandâs, âGet a move on, buddy!â)I just love this book. I love the pictures, the story, and how helpful it is.

Empowering, good for all ages
It reminds us that we make the choice to think about the things that are beautiful, true, and right. It empowers us and reminds us that we are not powerless. I love that this is not about breathing in and out and emptying our minds. Itâs about filling it with good things!

Great book for helping kiddos understand how thoughts influence feelings
I’m a therapist and use this book frequently with my young clients, to help them understand how thoughts influence their feelings. It’s brief so it holds their attention easily. The illustrations are appealing. I’ve used it with clients from the age of three through young teens.

Excellent book for people of all ages!
I found this book, “Catching Thoughts”, in my search for a book to read to my 8yo daughter, as she has anxiety and weâve been looking for books to ready together that talks about it.After reading this book with her and seeing the impact that it had, I realized that it’s really the perfect book, not just for kiddos, but also for most of the patients I work with as a counselor for patients with cancer. I’m sure when the author wrote the book she wasnât thinking it would be a great message for adults with cancer, especially after they have been “cured”. So many of our patients have a fear of recurrence and that thought takes up a lot of space in their minds, especially when it comes time for them to have follow-up visits and medical tests. I have ordered a copy of this book to keep at my work so I can share it with patients who come in for their survivorship visits with us. Many of them struggle to identify how they are feeling–they want to be able to relax and enjoy the fact that they are done with their treatment–but they also have realistic fears and anxieties about the cancer returning. I think this book simplifies how we can all benefit from reframing our thoughts to accept our negative ones while trying to focus on our neutral and positive ones.I highly recommend this bookâfor children and adults alike. Start building your own balloon bouquet of positive thoughts by ordering this gem of a book!

Great for Mindfulness
Have you ever had one of those days when a negative thought seems to take over? You try to shake it, but no matter how hard you try it lingers? I know I have! I think thatâs why I was drawn to Catching Thoughts. In this story, a young girl is bothered by a negative thought. She tells it to go away, ignores it, yells at it, and even starts to cry, but the thought wonât go away. Frustrated and discouraged, the girl finally looks that bad thought right in the face and says, âHelloâ. Thatâs when she starts to notice the beautiful and positive thoughts around her. As she catches these new thoughts, she is finally able to let go of the negative one. This book would be a great addition to your social-emotional learning book collection! It shows kids that big feelings are normal, but there are ways to acknowledge those feelings and strategies for working through them. This book ties in so well with mindfulness.

Perfect addition for all classroom libraries, K-12!
In a pure and honest manner, CATCHING THOUGHTS delves into the immobilizing nature of anxiety and then lifts it up and away to the beauty that can be found on the other side. Between Clarkâs prose and Maconâs delicate illustrations, this story is a great asset and, sure to be, much-loved treasure, especially in these troubling times. As a former classroom teacher, I think this book is a necessary addition to all classroom libraries.

Beautiful book!
This is such a lovely book. The illustrations are beautiful and the message timeless. We got it in the middle of the pandemic when my son (7) was struggling with anxiety and this book really resonated with him. Heâs asked to read it often and has referenced it when dealing with unwanted anxious thoughts. As a parent, I highly recommend and as a preschool teacher, I think it should be in every classroom!

Didn’t relate to the message
I thought this would be about letting go of thoughts, which is not really emphasized. It talks about ‘bad thoughts’ and encourages to catch the good thoughts. I didn’t relate to that labeling.

Most books for children with anxiety seem mainly to major on the importance of talking about the anxiety. When a child has thoughts that keep coming back, sometimes, in fact, talking about them doesnât make it that much better and can even make it worse. This explains how and why thoughts occur and that itâs possible not to ruminate over them without trying to ignore them.
