5/22 update … After a whole using this brush my teeth began to have cold sensitivity. I went to the dentist and he said the toothbrush is too firm and it damaged my gums. That’s why the ADA doesn’t approved firm toothbrushes.———If you’re actually reading a review about toothbrushes, then you are most likely here because like me, you finally located a “firm” toothbrush.Does this one measure up?First of all, this definitely is a very firm toothbrush! It makes the bristles of every other toothbrush I’ve used for years seem floppy in comparison. It is so firm that it leaves your teeth almost with that ‘just back from the dentist’ smooth clean feeling! Even in the hard to clean back of the tooth area. So long as your teeth haven’t crusted over too far, after a good work over with this toothbrush, the back of your teeth will likely feel nice and smooth. I am fastidious about oral hygiene, but the backs of my front teeth were just a little bit rough. Until this arrived.In fact, the toothbrush is so firm that it actually seems to break down the toothpaste. It’s like there’s not much grit left when you’re done.Now for the downside. It is so firm in fact that it actually can hurt the gums if you brush like you usually do with a lesser toothbrush. I found myself needing to be careful not to injure my gums.The most serious downside of this toothbrush this that the ergonomics are dismal. It is hard plastic, and it tapers down at the handle end. That makes it hard to grip. It is angled such that brushing certain areas of the mouth requires a lot of strength to hang onto the toothbrush. I’m a big strong Nordic kind of guy, and brushing with this toothbrush actually wears out my arm muscles. A little. Not real bad, but let’s just say that you’ll notice muscles working when you probably never have before while brushing teeth. This is all due to the ergonomics. To hang on to this brush takes muscles that I have not used before during tooth brushing.If I were going to rate this brush on ergonomics I would give it a one. However it gets a five because it’s advertised as firm, and it is a firm toothbrush! It gets my teeth cleaner than any toothbrush in memory.

Rating is for what I ordered, and I paid for… not for what I actually received.
Reach in general is a good brand and they produce a few different variations of all of their soft, med and firm toothbrushes and there is a difference between what each particular model and design within the same firmness offer. I have been using Reach firm toothbrushes for many years and I have tried the firm advanced design, the regular firm crystal clean (comes with the brush caps) and the firm total clean crystal clean. The “total clean” bristle head works best for me and the bristles on that model seem to stay firm for longer and that’s why I ordered these from this page. But unfortunately, some of the third-party venders that list their product using this total clean picture, colors and description here are actually providing Amazon with the lower rated regular crystal clean model to ship out which is disappointing to say the least because although at a glance they appear somewhat similar if I wanted the subpar brushes with the cheap caps, I would have ordered those!Imo, the total clean ones shown here on this page and what I should have received are great but be aware that although they ship from Amazon there is a good chance with this purchase that you will not get what you pay for when buying from certain third-party suppliers. With that being said I hope you get what is shown and what you pay for, I did not.
