What does variety do? What are we doing after we use the language of variety? Sara Ahmed gives an account of the range world based mostly on interviews with variety practitioners in larger training, in addition to her personal expertise of doing variety work. Variety is an peculiar, even unremarkable, function of institutional life. But variety practitioners usually expertise establishments as proof against their work, as captured by means of their use of the metaphor of the “brick wall.” On Being Included gives a proof of this obvious paradox. It explores the hole between symbolic commitments to variety and the expertise of those that embody variety. Commitments to variety are understood as “non-performatives” that don’t result in what they identify. The guide supplies an account of institutional whiteness and reveals how racism may be obscured by the institutionalization of variety. Variety is used as proof that establishments would not have an issue with racism. On Being Included gives a critique of what occurs when variety is obtainable as an answer. A must read
If you are interested in thinking critically about any aspect of equality, diversity and inclusion this is a must. Ahmed does a very good job in teasing out the pragmatic and discursive processes through which, that despite decades of equality legislation and institutional statements and initiatives aimed at expanding race equality and ethnic diversity, UK universities remain so far behind the starting gate of really getting to grips with the perpetuation of institutional racism at all levels.

I liked the book because it opened up my eyes to the hypocrisy plaguing most organizations when it come to their dealings with coloured people. On the other hand, it was a bit over-bearing due to the lengthy stories of racism.
in short, an eye opener
