Thank you so much, Margaret, for your wonderful book describing how to exercise safely to improve bone density!! I have been searching for safe exercises for years. I especially enjoy your videos on-line showing exactly how to do the exercises. The exercises you describe are easy to follow and your positivity is contagious! My posture is better and I’m feeling more confident already!! Thank you again for sharing your expertise with us! Peace, KD

Better Bones book recommended by my PT and has online videos, schedules, etc.
This book contains crucial info for all levels of osteoporosis AND fitness, with amazing modifications to individualize to you. It starts with how to be safe; and exercises you MUST AVOID, like crunches!! Posture is considered key to the spine and these exercises build with flexibility, balance, and cardiovascular ones. I worked with my PT (one with great knowledge of osteoporosis) for weeks on the exercises that I can do at my level: some at beginner, most at the active strength level and a few at the athletic. The hardest level is Elite. My therapist didn’t prescribe many other exercises since these are the best for me. Buying the book allows you to get all the other free resources Margaret Martin offers online. A lot! I highly recommend this book as an essential guide to safe exercises as well as informing you about osteoporosis care in general. Kudos to the author/PT,CSCS.

Exercise for Osteoporosis at Four Different Levels (Beginner, Active, Athletic, Elite)
After a DXA scan revealed bone loss, the doctor recommended I do “weight bearing exercise” (and take a drug, but I won’t talk about that here) and then left me to my own devices. No specifics on what weight bearing meant or that there were moves I should avoid. to protect my spine. Thanks a lot doc (not)! It was only through internet research that I stumbled across Margaret Martin’s Melio Guide website, which led me to the purchase of this book. I like that she provides four different exercise levels: beginner, active, athletic and elite ( no beginner wants to be thrown in the deep end of the pool, and nobody who has been a regular exerciser wants to do a beginner workout). I also respect that Ms. Martin is a licensed physiotherapist and certified trainer with a long history of working with the osteoporosis population – as well as training other physiotherapists; I think that is particularly important in this situation. I do wish the binding of the book was spiral-bound so that it would lay flat (personally, I think all exercise books should be spiral bound.) Also, I thought it was a little odd that although the exercises are described/pictured in the book, you have to visit her website to download specific workout plans/schedules (she offers both 3 day a week & 6 day a week plans). However, it is not hard to visit her website and she has so much additional osteoporosis-related content there, it is worth the visit (I especially enjoy the youtube stability ball warm-up she has posted – the music and the moves are fun and it makes me wish she would put out an exercise video!)

    Helpful Information
Very helpful information and illustrations of safe exercises to do if you have osteoporosis. I was surprised that some of the simple exercises made my muscles sore because I work out 3x a week and walk a half hour daily.

No videos that follow the workout plan and days
The book is very comprehensive, and so is the website. However, when putting together a plan and following it you have to keep turning to the pages to follow the exercises so it’s not consistent. There really should be a set of videos that follow the plan, like for beginner or beginner/active. Etc. there are a few actually full videos on you tube, but they don’t follow your plan and there is only one of each level. Lots of informative videos how to do a particular exercise, but they are only a few minutes long. I would purchase a set of videos that follow my plan, and even as I move from beginner/active to the next level. That would be great.

    Great Books and Programs!
I was recently diagnosed with Osteoporosis. The endocrinologist recommended the drug Foxamax, vitamin D3 and Glucerna drinks. I’ve learned not to follow any Dr. recommendations until I do my research on what they have prescribed. The drug Foxamax has so many side effects I would never take it and Glucerna has a lot of additives I do not want in my body. I am grateful I found Margret Martins books, Exercise for Better Bones and Yoga for better bones. I have only spent two weeks reading, exercising and watching her videos. However, she does and incredible job of explaining the exercises and the reasons behind each one. Her wisdom, expertise and passion is truly amazing! I highly recommend her books and exercise programsJulie, MN

    Great information to have
This book seems to cover the information I was looking for. Recently diagnosed with osteoporosis, I wanted to know how to safely exercise and rebuild the lost bones. Also gives you the website option that contains even more information including videos. Good to have pictures instead of just descriptions. Looking forward to getting on the exercise plan routine suggestions
