    Full of surprises
Willa and Laika are sisters who walk together every day to their private school. Only one day Willa leaves for school early and Laika never does. What happened to Laika and will the reader ever know or like the ending? – a page turner full of surprises. Recommended!

Ultimately, this book turned into an excellent novel. See my detailed comments below.
I loved the title of this novel, and that, plus its storyline description, is why I purchased this book. HOWEVER, I felt like this was almost two books masquerading as one. The first two-thirds were a slog, and I had to force myself to keep reading even though my interest waxed and waned as the author set the stage for the dynamic final third of the book. I am so happy that I hung in there and pushed through to the final third because that’s where the story exploded to such an extent that I couldn’t put it down until it was finished.

I wanted to love this book…
It was a bit confusing and all over the place. The story line was great, I just feel like it executed well. I really enjoyed Laika’s story, but then it just wasn’t believable. I felt the end was rushed. I kept waiting for the climax, and I got one for a few chapters then it went back to flat. I hate leaving negative reviews, but I just needed more of something.

Thoughtful and character-driven; kept me reading
Despite the misleading blurb description, I quite enjoyed Things Don’t Break on Their Own. (Seriously—who writes those things? And is it s.o.p. to write them after only skimming the first two chapters? Dear Blurb Writers: Do better.)Told from three perspectives, the novel primarily explores how Willa simultaneously navigates the abrupt disappearance of her younger sister, Laika, and the ongoing trauma of domestic abuse. Through both the primary and secondary characters, the author examines themes of memory and resilience and invites the reader to consider the kaleidoscopic concept of brokenness—That things don’t just break. That broken things can be fixed. That they can be made stronger and more beautiful through careful reconstruction. But also that not everything is worth fixing. My biggest criticism of the novel is that, despite the twenty-year time span, there doesn’t seem to be a substantial amount of character growth for the two sisters, nor is the potential for an ‘interrupted development’ theme fully explored. Nevertheless, the explicit inclusion of Kintsugi (and its opposite) and the discussion of memory at the blurb-hyped dinner party makes this an excellent book for discussion, even for readers who might normally struggle to identify themes.Overall, Things Don’t Break on Their Own is a thoughtful, character-driven debut with much to offer. I look forward to more from this author.

    Beautiful…..
I loved this book. The language of a poet…I could feel and almost touch the emotions it stirred. So many sentences I read and reread… They were so powerful or poignant. Just amazing. Thank you.

So good, I couldn’t put it down!
An amazing read, I’m sleep deprived from staying up too late reading! Creative, rich storyline relating different characters’ viewpoints. Narration of audio book is also great.

    Intense!
I listened to the audio version which was wonderful w the British & French accents. It was a quick listen…13 hrs or so….I enjoyed it & wanted to know what happened so made time to listen.Possible triggers: I can’t give it 5 stars bc I have a hard time reading about animalcruelty (a bit in the beginning) and horrific emotional & physical child abuse by a diabolical monster of a father. I almost stopped going any further but I’m glad I stuck with it. Absolutely loved the character of Robin & her beautiful family….great contrast to Leika & Willow’s upbringing. The wrap up/ending felt kind of hurried to me however all in all I really enjoyed this book & appreciated the hopeful ending.

  9. T.T.

Not a thriller but certainly a mystery, this book focuses on female friendship in the present and the long shadow of abuse in the past. It’s lyrical and always readable, an intimate and ultimately sunny story despite the subject matter. Great to catch a first novel by this very talented author.

Brilliant writing, great characterisation, interesting well paced plot. I found the book really gripping. However I was not entirely convinced by some of the twists (stories around passport, jewellery and others) otherwise I would have given it 5 stars.

Willa’s sister Laika disappears as a young teenager, but Willa never stops looking for her. Their father is arrested and released, and their mother is convinced a local builder is guilty. But the answer is more complicated, and the story unfolds from the viewpoints of Robyn and Willa as they grow up into young women.Robyn’s father is a potter, and when young Willa visits, he teaches her how to throw a pot – but he also teaches her to treasure pots that have been broken and lovingly mended. If only Willa’s father was like Robyn’s! Cruel Bryce makes his daughters’ lives a misery – no wonder Laika ran away – or did she?A page-turning story of female friendship, betrayal and survival – with a perfect ending.

SPOILER: I knew this story wouldn’t work when I read the scene at the dinner party where her sister whispered in Willa’s ear. It just wasn’t done that well. Nothing after that really worked and all just seemed clunky and contrived. We’re supposed to believe that the mother and Willa were capable of rage when no examples of this were written into the story. It was all predictable and silly and a bit of a waste of time tbh. It’s a pity because I think the 1st half of the booked worked well.
