It gives kids a bigger view of the school and what goes on there and all the people that are involved in what schools are meant to do – educate the kids by giving them a rich, community-based learning environment.There are so many creative ways teachers can use this book:⢠Make a list of all the workers in the book. Write a short description of what they do and draw a picture of the worker.⢠Kids can choose one of the workers and write a sentence or more (depending on their grade) about what the worker does.⢠Make a classroom book of the workers with their photos.⢠If the kids could be one of the workers when they grow up, which would they want to be and why?⢠Take the kids on a walk around the school and look for the workers. Find out their names and where on the campus they work.⢠Make a map of the school showing where the workers do their jobs. This book shares the importance of everyone and the value of their role. This is the tool you can use to thoughtfully introduce your secretaries, cafeteria workers, custodians, principals, counselors, librarians and nurses.Parent volunteers are mentioned, which is especially important in setting the tone to build those relationships. Reading and speech groups are shown so that students can understand the process of small groups and build these connections.Your students knowing and identifying these members of your school family will set the tone for a positive school atmosphere and environment. It will also help aide your students in acknowledging and realizing the importance of their role and how it relates to them, as students- for example- cleaning up in the cafeteria is everyone doing their part, makes our custodian’s job easier.Reading this book with my first-grade class sparked conversations about how we can thank these wonderful staff members in return for their kindness and efforts to make our school a special place. An understanding of each individual role and how it contributes to the greater good sets you and your class up for success. I am thankful for this book because it enabled my class to construct meaning of the ways we are grateful for all people in the building. Examples of saying hello, good morning, and thank you are modeled and promote kindness and manners.I recommend this book be placed in every school and utilized in every classroom! I loved it so much I purchased the Kindle version as well so my class could truly zoom in on the illustrations.Pictured are diverse people and students, so all children can see themselves and loved ones in the story in an inclusive way.The rhyming patterns are engaging, the story has beautiful flow, and maintains a positive and joyful tone from beginning to end! A “must have” to build community and school pride in a meaningful way.

SO INCLUSIVE! MY KIDS LOVED THIS BOOK
I recently read “Our School is a Family” with my children, and we both absolutely loved it!
