    Health and Nutrition Principles to Optimize Performance
    I was pleasantly surprised by the amount of information in this book. I’ve taken a lot of kinesiology classes (including sports nutrition) and was a college athlete so there’s generally not a lot of new material for me in these types of books. However, to me, The Vertical Diet isn’t an academic treatise on nutrition but rather a practitioner’s guide to getting results. There’s a ton of tips and tricks in here that aren’t covered in other books. For example, there’s an entire section on digestion, acid reflux, how to increase insulin resistance, and even simple tips, like taking a 10 minute walk after eating that just make sense. There’s also information on supplementation, hormones, metabolism, stress, sleep and step-by-step instructions to help you create a meal plan to meet your goals. Overall, I think this is one of the best books I’ve read on the practical aspects of nutrition since Fuel Up by Dr. Eric Sternlicht (my former professor, but also a bodybuilder turned endurance athlete). I think I appreciate these books a little bit more because they come from people that have “been there and done that.” I can’t recommend this book enough for anyone that’s serious about improving their health and athletic performance.

    Don’t think about it buy it!
    So I just received my book on yesterday and I have not been able to put it down! This is a fabulous book. Now some of the things in the book have gone against what I have been told for years but I will do my research to confirm that it is the best option for me. The Vertical Diet In my opinion is a lifestyle change for the better! I am so impressed I cannot wait to finish the book and re-read it again and basically just have it as a study guide as a roadmap to a better life! Buy it

    Highly recommend the Vertical Diet as your next diet! The book is great. I have ordered other diet books from people in the bodybuilding industry and they all seem to be fluff or the exact same chicken and brown rice strategy. This book is based in science and you know coming from Stan Efferding and some of the elite athletes that have used i(and continue t) it is tried and true and ready to get you to your fitness goals. Really informative. Great recipes and breakdown of why it works. You want to reach peak performance than you need this book!

    I’ve been following the vertical diet since 2016. My deadlift went from 477lbs to 495lbs in 2 months without even deadlifting! Thanks to Stan Effereding experience, and wisdom this has optimized my physical and mental health. This book covers a variety of topics, sleep, training, nutrition and health. If you want to get shredded in 12 weeks there’s plenty of options, if you want to keep kicking ass for decades, this is the book and diet for you! If you want to feel better, look better, perform better, buy 2 of these! One for you and one for your gym bro’s!

    Wish I had this when I started lifting
    I wish this book existed when I started lifting 10 years ago, it would have made gaining weight so much easier. Clear, concise explanations for everything in here, and what I like is a complete beginner could pick this book up and there are instructions on how to calculate calories, macros, and structure on what to eat. And there’s simple advice that goes a long way that I wish I would have thought of like the 10 min walks after meals.

    Finally have a hardcopy of the one diet I can stick to. I’ve read the digital release and watched Stan’s video’s. I have learned a ton and this new book just makes it that much easier to follow. Lowered bp and inceased performace along with have a better quality of life following the principles taught in the diet. Go get it and learn alot!

    Well made book, great if you want to keep it simple
    First I want to say that I think Mr. Efferding is a very respectable athlete and scholar. I do enjoy listening to him and have no doubt he knows a vast amount all things strength health and fitness. I’ve given this book a two star rating because it so obviously is intended to sell to the masses, get lots of great reviews, and make money.Actual dietary science is incredibly tedious and tiresome, and includes many many “depends on this” and “depends on that” statements that lead one either to ambiguous instructions or else oppositional stances (such as the safety and benefit of saturated fat animal protein vs plant based diets)…as well as a lot of mind numbing chemistry…what a hassle. So rather than all that, just break it all down for them…that’s what this book appears to be doing. It is does that extremely well.The problem is, it dismisses entire continents of recently verified science on its route to your kitchen shelf. Almost no one in the biochem field any longer accepts the fundamental premise that a “calorie is calorie, and that weight is a simple equation of energy in – energy expended. The hormonal/metabolic factors of food are by this point all but indisputable. I refer to authors such as Gary Taubes or Siim Land, and many many more.Caloric deficit is not sustainable, reduces your energy output capacity, and frequent eating is inflammatory. Need simple proof? Look the bodies of Siam Land, or Marcus Philly (look him up)…and look at Brad. Brad is gargantuan, not in a natural way, the other guys are muscular but lean and natural looking. Brad has admitted (I am pretty sure, forgive me if I err on this) the use of steroids in order to keep up with his competitors. So everything he says in his book is a hypocrisy. If I take steroids and work out really hard I’ll get big impressive muscles – that is a biohack. Not mentioned in the book.Well anyway, there’s nothing wrong with earring healthy whole foods and maintaining a caloric *balance*. It’s just that so much more need be understood, and the book seems to avoid this in interest of satiating the scientifically disinclined reader.

    Das Buch ist sehr gut um seine Ernährung leicht und übersichtlich zu strukturieren. Das ganze ist wie der Name sagt “vertikal” strukturiert. Sprich das Buch gibt ein Fundament an, das man in seiner Ernährung haben sollte und darauf kann man aufbauen – dort werden dann verschiedene Lebensmittel genannt die man in die Ernährung einbinden kann und welche Vorteile diese haben. Somit kann man am Ende des Buchs eine sehr gute Ernährung für den Sportler aber auch für den Normalverbraucher zusammenstellen.

    I was very disappointed in the lack of any really substance in the book. Though touted as a “diet” book, it spends an inordinate amount of space talking about everything BUT diet (exercise, stress, sleeping, etc). Given the author is a renowned strongman, one would have thought that any exercise programs discussed would be targeted for serious strength development. Instead, it is a very vanilla set of recommendations aimed at anyone, but without any useable advice. A short appendix of simplistic recipes doesn’t add much. The book is loaded with pretty pictures that add little to the content, as well as user stories that add more unnecessary filler. I was doubly disappointed as I bought it after it was flouted on Starting Strength podcasts, a spot where I usually get useful information on training and diet.
