A rich, informative book that has enticing hikes for every state.
The first thing I noticed about this book was how lush it was in terms of pictures. Every hike looked enticing. The individual hike entries are a combination of a local person’s experiences and a more normal description. This added personal perspective is very welcome. Most of the outdoor books in my library have a regional focus, this is only nationwide one I have so it’ll be something I consult every time I travel somewhere and it’ll be a good help in finding something along the way during road trips. In addition to the hikes, the books has a number of valuable short features – recipes, a packing list, information on nursing on the trail, what to train your child to do if they get lost, hiking the Appalachian Trail, etc. The only problem is that these are not listed in the table of contents. You have to hunt for them, but they do have different colored page edges so the hunt isn’t hard. I’ll use a post-it to bookmark the ones which are useful to me. The only other shortcoming is the lack of a map. It would have been nice to see where all the hikes are located so I can more easily check when I’ve traveling if one is nearby. One other thing to point out regarding the hike descriptions is that the summary is more detailed than most. For example it lists park fees and whether there’s a toilet, benches, water, changing table, whether dogs or bikes are allowed, etc. The information on toilet and water is especially helpful when you’re hiking which children.

Good quality, thick, informative book!
I got this as a gift for my sister who recently had a baby. She and her husband were having difficulty gauging what hikes would be appropriate to do with their baby and this was the perfect solution. I think its a great motivator for new parents to get back out on trails that they can enjoy with their young children. Also, this book is quite thick and very nice quality which really adds to the experience of using it as a reliable resource.

Reminder of Enjoy the Journey
I have undervalued hiking almost all my life. Like, if I want to walk, why do I need to drive so far to a certain location with bugs that bite me to walk up hills? When I have done hikes in the past, I would race through them just to get to the end. This book is on why not to do that ð It reminded me of the simple activities and unique sites that are not seen everyday that are easily present on trails. I used to think waterfalls? They all look the same anyway. However, the book goes into the geologic history of some locations and the area’s human history with some locations, which adds to why this is not just another waterfall, bridge to cross over, pond to splash in.This book helped me understand why a picture of an area isn’t enough and how fun of an activity this is that I can share with my kids. I found myself highlighting many locations and adding them to my bucket list. I kept being surprised at how many areas featured animals and flowers that are rare, though I shouldn’t be as it is easy to see how much land just in my own area is converted each year into human homes.Overall, I have a much better grasp on what to point out for my kids, how to handle problems on a trail, and how to be more present on a hike.

A great resource for families of all abilities who are looking to get outside!
As a novice hiker who loves getting outside, I wanted to make sure that my first born was introduced to the trails early on. I found it daunting at first trying to figure out the gear that I needed and which hikes would be suitable for my little one. But then I discovered this amazing woman Shanti and her organization Hike It Baby and I found everything I needed as well as an incredibly supportive community willing to help. This book brings all of Shanti’s expertise together in one place and is a great resource for anyone looking to take their kids on hikes. And as a bonus, it’s beautifully put together. Definitely a great addition to my outdoor activity library.

while making sure that even the very youngest hikers still have a good time. Add to that tips and tricks for …
This book fills a very needed role for the adventurous type as they transition to adventurous parents. So often trail reviews don’t mention children at all, or, as in the book’s description, review on the assumption that parents are taking older children who can do an entire hike on their own feet, and carry their own gear, and can understand distance. Whether you are looking for a trail in your home state you can day trip to, or planning a vacation and aren’t sure of where you can go with your toddlers, the trails in this book are sourced directly from parents of infants, toddlers, and preschoolers, who have been there for trail meltdowns, and know the secrets that will keep adventure in your family, while making sure that even the very youngest hikers still have a good time. Add to that tips and tricks for gear, diaper changes, and breast/bottle feeding on the trail, this book is a must-have for anyone looking to explore the wild with young children–new parents, experienced parents, grandparents, caregivers–anyone with an adventurous spirit will be happy to have this right next to your hiking boots!

This book is great for the entire family to check out
This book is great for the entire family to check out. My daughter loves the pictures and I read the adventures to her. Weâre traveling from Washington to California this summer and we canât wait to check out some of the family adventures along the way. Not just a guide book, it has amazing stories of family adventures and parents learning to hike with kids. Lovely book and very well thought out.
