Homeless teen finds redemption: Spirituality for the 99 percent
There are real people out there like Agnes “Apple” Bailey, the 16-year old girl who runs away from her abusive mother at the start of the film “Gimme Shelter,” only to end up pregnant and homeless on the streets of New York. But Apple, portrayed convincingly by a near-unrecognizable Vanessa Hudgens, is only one highlight of this film.Excellent performances are also found with the sympathetic Father McCarthy (James Earl Jones) and the abusive mother (Rosario Dawson) who influence the direction of Apple’s life. And Kathy DiFiore, the compassionate social worker (Ann Dowd) who takes in Apple, is portrayed with great compassion. After trading an abusive marriage for homelessness, the real-life DiFiore founded the “Several Sources” homeless shelters for pregnant teens that inspired this little indie film.Bottom line: This movie is the absolute best pro-life film I’ve ever seen. It’s more high-quality that low-budget Protestant stuff like “October Baby.” It’s also more realistic than “Bella” since it’s based on a true story. Although “Bella” is a powerful and moving film, it’s also a whimsical fiction, whereas “Gimme Shelter” gets added grit from its basis in real life. It is a labor of love. Both “Bella” and “Gimme Shelter” are Catholic films, but “Gimme Shelter” feels more real, more heartfelt, and more immediate to the experience of young people growing up in a world of haves and have-nots.It’s also one of the best social justice films I’ve ever seen, giving an amazingly sharp depiction of teenage homelessness that riveted my theology students when we watched the film together. They are usually pretty immune to any sort of “care about the world” message. But this film, maybe because Vanessa Hudgens was in it got to them. “Gimme Shelter” has the biting realism of “Dead Man Walking” without any of the moral sermonizing. This DVD includes a brilliant transfer with 5.1 audio, deleted scenes with director’s commentary, a “making of” featurette, and the usual Spanish subtitles. It’s a great package of a great indie film. I highly recommend it.

    Have Faith Never Give Up
Tells the story of sadly many teens who are born into trouble. Hudgens steps up to the challenge, and to the dismay of some more secular critics, helps to tell the tale strongly. Yes America, bad things do happen to good people, but stick with your faith and listen to moral advice, and you can succeed.Brendan Fraser and James Earl Jones help to make this a keeper!I purchased at least ten and distributed them to family and friends.

    A very moving true story
What a great movie! I can relate to Apple to some degree, because I was abandoned by both parents, placed in an abusive foster home. On my own at 18. But she really had it bad with her abusive Mom. I hope Apple does well in life and that she makes a good Mom and changes her life around. It is possible I did. Also the world could use more people like Father McCarthy. The movie was so moving and when Apple had her baby she showed such love for her baby. That part really made me cry. I am so glad to see there are good people like Kathy DiFiore who transformed her home into a shelter and gave the teens the option of life instead of abortion. It is a very moving story. I truly enjoyed it.

Beyond a doubt, THE best movie I’ve ever seen!
This movie was awesome! I saw it at the cinema and was so moved by it. I left with a restored hope in humanity, knowing that there are people like Kathy DiFiori doing what they are doing to help right the many things wrong in our world today.Vanessa Hudgens and Rosario Dawson blew me away! Their characters are so authentic. I was intrigued by every scene and new development in the story. I don’t want to give any of it away, there was just SO much in this story that I loved. Many attack it and I honestly can’t fathom why!? It’s so well acted, real and professional. So exciting, moving, inspiring, and enlightening. It’s not a well-known film but I hope that will change! I definitely recommend this movie to everyone.Cannot wait till my DVD copy gets here so I can show it to everyone I know!We need more real stories like this. I will never forget it.

What appears to be the sad future for so many of our youth
I consider myself an average income, conservative, American. I don’t live under a rock and plainly see what is happening to our country and society. We are throwing our children under the bus with all the divorce, drugs, and selfish/ liberal life style choices we are making today. This movie is based on a true story and I”d like to think it was just Hollywood–but sadly enough- this is closer to reality than we realize- It was almost painful to watch this, knowing that so many of our youth have or will go through the hell this young woman experienced.. “Everyone” should view this and really ponder the messages that “scream” out to a world that is totally oblivious to it’s own demise. Parents, teachers, young people, all adults that really care, need to see this with blinders off!.and become part of the solution–not passively part of the problem- This is a wake up call —

    Reality is real life
I understood her plight about being a teenage mother, but I had family support. She was born into unforseen circumstances and dealt with the cards of life that she was given. The world tends to beat down teenage mothers but overall the root of their issue stems from wanting to be loved. So having a child in their minds gives them the opportunity to give the love that their longing for in their lives. But the reality of it all is they don’t understand the real sacrifice on their lives once the child is born. It’s amazing how a house full of strangers can feel like your family then your own flesh and blood. This video will be used as a teaching tool for our ministry at our church for teenage mothers.

This is a truly thought provoking film which had me crying about 4 times! The acting was brilliant! I cannot believe how brilliant it was. You can see how well the perform if you just watch any other films with them in. Its a really good film I advise everybody to see at least once

Basically this is a dramatized story of actual events in a womans refuge in America.Vanessa Hudgens plays a pregnant 16 year old who’s life has been hell until she ends up in a refuge.A gritty story but well worth watching in my humble opinion.

I am always looking for an honest story line, not fancied up with glamour to make it appealing to some. This movie, I imagine, would be like a documentary if it had a narrator. I had no difficulty feeling for the character and her circumstances. And that’s the way I prefer it.
