In the barber shop where I grew up, after trimming the sideburns and cleaning up the back of the neck with a straight razor, my barber would always use an after have lotion to cut down on irritation. I remember loving the smell of it and how it went on and soothed without too much of any burning. I never knew what that stuff was and I never thought to ask (hey I was a dumb kid back in those days what do you want from me). After reading lots of reviews on Amazon saying that this stuff is what their barber uses, I picked some up.At first I was concerned it was going to be a flop. At first application it had a really spicy scent which smelled mainly like cloves. After a few minutes of soaking in though, it smelled exactly like the stuff I remember! I am happy to have found it once again. After all, I don’t have much hair these days so I don’t get to go to the barber unless my son is getting his hair cut.It has a manly scent that is a bit strong at first, but then mellows out and is perfect. Not too strong but very present and it works well with my col. conk Bay Rum Shaving soap. I like it a lot and can’t imagine it being disliked by many. If you have never smelled bay rum before, think somewhere along the lines of Old Spice only not so brutally intense or strong and a little more sweet.Considering its 12 ounces for less than 20 bucks its a great deal. Should last me a while since its not my main after shave (I’ll just use it time to time for nostalgia I suppose). For the price it’s not much of a risk to purchase and if you don’t like it you certainly will find someone who will gladly take it off your hands. The only reason I am not rating it a full 5 stars is because it comes in a cheap plastic bottle. The plastic is very thin and flimsy and makes it difficult to pour out just the right amount without accidentally getting too much or too little. Makes the overall presentation feel a bit cheap, but then at a little more than a dollar an ounce I guess it is kinda cheap…in a good way.

Smells great⦠but wrong
So, this is a tough one. This stuff smells great (very similar to an old bottle of Stetson I once used) but smells almost entirely unlike bay rum. I have made my own aftershave from actual bay rum leaves and isopropyl alcohol so I really do know what it’s supposed to smell like, and am only buying aftershave now since I don’t live in an area where the plant grows anymore. 1 star for accuracy, 5 stars for just smelling good, 3 stars overall.

It smells immediately like that sweet island smell like it says, then it breaks down into just cinnamon and cloves. It does not smell like that musky old man smell like a lot of cheaper aftershaves do. I think this is probably the best aftershave for the price. The size is decent, and it has that great pinaud quality.

Die alteingesessene Marke Pinaud Clubman hatte ich früher manchmal, bin zwischendurch zu den ebenfalls sehr guten und deutlich teureren Produkten von Truefitt and Hill und Taylor of Bond Street gewechselt, auch hin und wieder eine Flasche von Hermes gekauft. Nachdem die Preise im Luxussegment über die letzten Jahre absurd explodiert sind, finde ich es bildhaft und buchstäblich erfrischend, mit Pinaud ein hochanständiges und wirksames Produkt für 15 EUR ersteigern zu können. Werde mir einige Flaschen davon einlagern.
