Great resource for home or classrooom
This set of 4 20th century history books gives a nice overview of the major events that helped shape our country during that time. I think if you just got the American history one, you would miss out on many important events related to African Americans and women, so I appreciate the full set of these so that you don’t miss out on those.The writing is appropriate for the target age range of 8-12 and includes a nice amount of pictures and other small features to accompany the main text. Even though difficult topics are covered, the information is presented in a factual manner. Positive achievements in sports, music, entertainment, etc. are also covered and help give a well-rounded picture of important events in history.Together, the books help give a good basic overview of important 20th century events. Of course, there is so much to cover, it is impossible for everything to be included in depth, but this is a great reference set and can be used as a starting point for more in-depth studies.

excellent set of 20th century history books
This set contains 4 books on 20th century history; it includes American History, World History, Women in History, and African American History. Each book covers a wide range of topics relevant to the last century, including war and politics, culture, and technology.The books are well-written and good for the average middle school reader. Kids in high school and adults will get something out of them too, as they are packed full of information. They have plenty of photo illustrations but are primarily text. They each have a glossary at the end to help readers with new terms. I recommend them for classrooms or for kids interested in history.

A decent addition to history curriculum
I ordered these for my daughter, who is not very interested in history at this point, and she found them engaging enough to sit through them. Although the books are more of an overview than a deep dive on any one area at a time, there’s a lot of info on each page and that proved a little challenging for her to digest. They read as pretty politically neutral. I don’t feel like they’d be a great resource on their own but paired with a curriculum, they’re a decent add-on.

Very difficult (and not engaging) for my 8-year old
I took a look at some of the other reviews before writing this and was surprised how many people found it age-appropriate. My daughter just turned 8 so, granted, she’s at the bottom of the 8-12 yo reading level, but she’s a very advanced reader (she is currently reading the Dragon Master series, Magic Treehouse and the Goosebumps series) for her age and she is fascinated by history, so she was really excited about these books. But the format and vocabulary are both pretty challenging for her.In terms of the format, there is a LOT of information in a very short space. When there’s just one or two pages devoted to a complex topic, it’s almost impossible for her to make any sense of what any of it refers to. There are a lot of names of famous people she’s not yet familiar with and no real context for anything that happened.I’m sorry I can’t give this a better review and it may be that in another year or two this will work better for her. Honestly, though, I think the writers should have simplified the language a bit and provided a little more context/depth to the events they’re discussing.
