A really good book for novice and intermediate lifters
I have been lifting for about 17 years and was getting a bit stale. I got tons of great ideas from this book.
Who knew that proper foot placement would improve your bench press? But it really does. Jumping jacks as part of your warmup? Never would of thought of it, but I really like it. And a lot of new things that I am trying like Face Pulls and Side Bends.
Their training cycles are intense and should move you along very quickly if you have the time and motivation to follow them. But as the authors emphasize, you need to focus on what works for you and make adjustments as necessary. In fact for many amateurs, one set to failure will work almost as well as multiple set cycles and take a lot less time.
There is so much information and so many good tips in this book, you can’t hope to incorporate them all at once. Read a bit, do a bit, and just see what works best for you.

Great buy for anyone interested in strength training!
I’m a professional in the fitness field with other 10 years of experience and would recommend this book to all of my colleagues. The approach makes it appealing to the novice but also provides great information for the experienced as well. I’m an ASCM exercise Physiologist and a NSCA CSCS yet I was able to learn and apply useful programs for my clients. This book also makes a great reference for any strength training room for athletes!! What I like is from warm up, strength exercises, and injury prevention stretches I have one resource that I can grab to get answers. Do yourself a favor and add this to your library!!

OK, but doesn’t go into enough detail about how to properly do some lifts
This is a book for lifters. He emphasizes the importance of doing lifts correctly, but sometimes doesn’t spend enough time explaining exactly how to do the lifts. He is a big proponent of squats and very negative on leg press machines, but doesn’t fully explain how to do a squat and doesn’t recognize that for some older people leg presses are a useful exercise and are safer than squats done with less than perfect technique.

    Great strength training read
This book hits the sweet spot of being detailed enough to really give instruction on how lifting should look and feel, but straightforward enough that total novices can understand and start a training program very quickly. I really appreciate the pictures beside every movement. I’ve started to implement the intermediate lifting plan into my training and my body seems to be responding in a positive manner. I’m looking forward to getting a few more copies for my friends.

The book is well written for a novice like me and has become a great resource
I am new to fitness. I used a personal trainer for 4 months and then went off on my own. I ordered this book to help me learn new exercises to mix up my training routine. The book is well written for a novice like me and has become a great resource.

    Hope you like doing squats
I got this to find some more free weight exercises for my upper body that were safe for my back, shoulders, and neck. If there were any isolation exercises that didn’t involve squats, I was already doing them. The advice is pretty sound but a great dearth of the exercises in this book involved a squat in one form or another.
