An enlightening biography and gripping sports activities narrative that takes us behind the scenes into the lives of a number of the world’s most elite runners in Kenya and their coach, Patrick Sang.
“I extremely advocate this guide.” —Meb Keflezighi
At a secluded coaching camp in Kaptagat, Kenya, a small city practically 8,000 toes above sea degree within the Nice Rift Valley, three-dozen world-class runners, together with Olympic champions, world report holders and the quickest marathoner of all-time, share easy dormitory-style rooms and endure grueling exercises six days every week.
These decided, devoted, and selfless runners are who they’re due to a person named Patrick Sang. One of many best—and least-heralded coaches within the sport—Sang is described by his athletes as a “life coach.”
In We Share the Solar, Sarah Gearhart takes us inside this high-octane world of elites of which few are even conscious of and even fewer have ever seen. We’re immersed in Sang’s outstanding story, from his faculty days within the US to successful an Olympic medal within the steeplechase, and his journey to turn out to be a person who redefines what teaching means. There isn’t any singular secret to athletic success, however, as readers will be taught, Sang’s holistic philosophy is like no different strategy on the earth. It’s rooted in creating athletes who can navigate the pressures of elite competitors—and life itself.
In these pages, we discover Sang’s affect on his athletes — together with his distinctive and longstanding relationship with marathon world report holder Eliud Kipchoge — as they ready for the delayed Tokyo Olympics and different competitions. We witness the outstanding restoration of two-time New York Metropolis Marathon champion Geoffrey Kamworor after a freak accident as he strove to earn his first Olympic medal. And we observe one of many world’s most dominant mid-distance runners, Religion Kipyegon, as she tried a historic repeat title within the 1,500 meters three years after the start of her first little one.
We Share the Sunbrings forth the outstanding lives and tales of East African runners, whose tales are seldom shared. By way of Gearhart’s vivid prose, we expertise the richness that exists in Kenya as we come as shut as we presumably can to working alongside a present and future technology of elites—and the person who molds them into champions.

A Must-Read for Runners⦠or Anyone Really
The level of access the author had to the athletes and coaches involved drives an amazing feel of authenticity throughout the entire book. While the story is well known in the running community, it has never been told with this level of detail and intimacy. Runners and non-runners alike will be inspired by this story.
The only question remaining is, âWhen does the movie come out?!â

A very cool story!
I was surprised how much I enjoyed this. A very in-depth look into the world of distance running that I didn’t expect to appreciate. There is an obvious passion for the sport by the author. As a non-runner I found it all very interesting. I can only imagine how much runners would like it.

Passion for Running
Well-thought out and researched look at elite Kenyan runners. Gearhart has a passion for the written word and her subject matter. Excellent pick for runners and even those interested in pursuing your passion at the highest level and what it takes to get there.

An inspiring read for running…and life! A must read for any runner.
I could never run as fast as the amazing athletes featured in WE SHARE THE SUN even for one minute, but their coach, the legendary Patrick Sang, has a philosophy that even weekend warriors and dedicated lifelong amateurs can take to heart. But this is much more than a ‘how-to.’ It’s a rich and insightful portrait into Sang, his athletes and their lifestyle, as well as the philosophies that unite them. I also learned a great deal about Kenyan athletics and the various cultures and traditions that have shaped Sang and his athletes. A must read for any runner!

Could have been so good!
Being an aficionado and lover of the sport since the late 90s (Haile Gebreselassie was a god in my youth) I was beyond excited for this book. Its release aligned with Kipyegon’s brilliant 2023 season, Kamworer’s cross country redemption and, obviously, Kipchoge’s massive achievements in recent years. And, having just read Michael Crawley’s stunning Out of Thin Air, I was expecting a similar book but with the focus on Kenya. The accolades (including one from Crawley) only raised those expectations.
Unfortunately, this just didn’t hit the mark for me. The writing was dull and cliche-ridden. At times it felt like uninspired long-winded journalism with hardly any structure or drama. I was bored. Really bored. And, if someone who cares about the subject is bored (I catch all marathon majors and Diamond League meets), I can’t imagine how the average reader must feel. There’s an artful way to produce sports biographies while making them enjoyable (i.e. Barefoot Runner or Today We Die a Little!) and this one fell far short of that. Much of it was just a regurgitating facts.
Patrick Sang deserves a much better biography. The wait continues for me.
2-stars because I do love the subject and managed to get some nuggets of wisdom. It just feels like a missed opportunity overall.

Book cover came damaged
I was giving this book to my son and when I opened the box the cover was damaged . I was very disappointed with the condition of the book. It looks used when I paid for a new book.
