Once again, a new fun book for kids to learn about kindness
I read the authorâs previous book about school rules, and I also enjoyed her recent book about kindness. When a new girl joins the class, her mean words throw everyone in disarray. Their kind and gentle coach guides the kids to help them see that it is better to spread kindness to others than to undercut their peers with mean words.
One critique that I would add is that in theory children will learn to be kind because it feels good, but some kids require different strategies and techniques to develop their empathy and compassion, especially when they have a learning disability or mental disorder. These kids are capable of learning, but they may need a different approach. I admire the diversity of students and there is even one kid with a prosthetic leg depicted so I would give bonus points for disability representation without being too heavy-handed. Another essential book for the classroom!

The book has excellent flow and visuals. The kids immediately started piping in when the characters were correcting the injustice. I think this gave them the tools to reinforce what we try to teach at home and I can see how they’ll adopt these positive practices into their social circles. This childrenâs picture book is full of wonderful rhymes and the storyline is brought to life by the accompanying brilliant illustrations. The author is, in fact, the real life version of the main character of the book and so is able to draw upon actual situation and experience that kids will readily identify with. This would be a very fun book to have the kids take turns reading out loud. Highly recommended.
