Remembering that our kids learn self-regulation from us is a perspective-shaper, as well as remembering the Little Adult Syndrome we often project on our kids. The No Talking rule for parents is golden and effective. Besides managing anger, the other sections are helpful and related (even dealing with homework, dinner, and bedtime challenges). Chapter 19 on Sympathetic Listening has been an effective strategy for dissolving anger in my child, particularly reflecting his feelings. I’d recommend this book to anyone struggling with behavior.

Discipline simplified
With all the parenting information out there, I really appreciated the simplicity of this approach. I have a tendency to talk too much and it really does take a lot of practice to hold back but it gets easier the more you do it. It helps keep you as a parent more calm and in control. Instead of thinking in the moment, “how should I handle this tantrum?” or just automatically yelling, it gives me a simple, calm plan. The most important thing I’ve learned as a parent is to stay consistent and this is no different. Kids catch on pretty quick when they know what to expect because the boundary is being held. I appreciated all the different scenarios in the book and the realness of a lot of the parents that felt very relatable.It doesn’t always work perfectly with my kids every time but a majority of the time it does. I definitely still have some room for improvement.Loved that it was an easy and enjoyable read. I looked forward to reading it each day and I do not consider myself a reader.

Great book, insightful
My eldest daughter is 2.5 and we really were struggling with listening. Iâve tried the counting method on my own but Iâd always give unrealistic consequences. This book was an easy read, and made discipline for us much easier. Not to mention itâs a great book for as the child grows and we add siblings to our family. Iâd recommend reading a little before 2 so you can take off running. I do not think the discipline is harsh or out of sync with this current generation of parenting! I think itâs pretty gentle but very realistic in helping your child learn and grow with proper boundaries and expectations

I bought this book in 2016. My son is now 9, and every now and then (very rarely really) I hear myself saying âthatâs oneâ or waving at him from the other side of the pool and just lifting one finger. He knows exactly what I mean, and immediately changes behavior. He had terrible tantrums from ages 2-4. But people who knew him then canât believe it when they see him now. This approach WORKS. And itâs soooo easy to maintain once itâs firmly set in place. I highly recommend it.The reason why Iâm writing this review now, after so many years, is because I listened to Emily Osterâs podcast âHave we Forgotten How to Disciplineâ and it brought back many memories.

This book was a godsend! Was struggling with my 5 year old and discipline. I read the book and I was literally magically in my house. Problems resolved quickly and less of a power struggle in our household. Also rented the movie from the library (very helpful too!)

Back to Basics
The principles in this book are non-negotiable for parents of little kids. Dr. Phelanâs basic principle of counting to three is a tried and true parenting staple since probably Adam and Eve. His examples and explanations, however, seem really diminishing and derogatory towards children. He sees them as monsters that need correction instead of animals learning everything around them (alright thatâs an exaggeration, but the point remains). The principles and practices in this book are extremely helpful, but Dr. Phelanâs explanation is subpar at best. I definitely recommend reading this to learn the principles of 123-timeout, bonding with your children, etc. but remember that no one knows your child better than you.

Before this book our 3 year old was a terror. We were always trying different techniques we read online to deal with the poor anttitude and tantrums and then I found this book through mention in Emily Osterâs book, Cribsheet. Decided to give it a try we had overnight results. I no longer get stressed or feel overwhelmed when we go to do things that used to result in a tantrum. I feel like I FINALLY have the necessary tools in my tool belt to handle any situation. Our relationship with our son is so much better – we are closer than ever thanks to this book.

I had super nanny books when the boys were toddlers but found It was lengthy and so much packed in but this book is straight to the point and so relatable!Absolutely brilliant, me and my partner sat together the night we received it and could really relate to what was on the book. We sat and wrote down a plan, then straight away started to implement techniques that were in the book, not just with our child with ADHD but with our youngest son too and working together we got there. It isnât a quick fix or a miracle book you must stay strong and stick to what you say,if you are implementing something new we did a lot of sitting down as a family and evaluating ourselves for this to work.Our sons behaviour is a lot more settled, his behaviour as changed drastically to the point family comment on how mature he his getting and the bond we have as a family is must stronger.I would recommend for any parent with young children. Every now and again I reopen this book and refresh.
