Think about a world through which Gen Xers, millennials, and boomers work together with younger folks in ways in which depart them feeling impressed, enthusiastic, and able to contribute—reasonably than disengaged, outraged, or overwhelmed. That world could also be nearer than you assume. On this ebook based mostly on innovative analysis, psychologist David Yeager explains methods to cease fearing younger folks’s brains and hormones and begin harnessing them.
Neuroscientists have found that round age ten, puberty spurs the mind to crave socially rewarding experiences, equivalent to pleasure, admiration, and respect, and to grow to be extremely averse to social ache, equivalent to humiliation or disgrace. Consequently, younger individuals are subtly studying between the strains of every little thing we are saying, making an attempt to interpret the hidden implications of our phrases to seek out out if we’re disrespecting or honoring them. Surprisingly, this sensitivity to standing and respect continues into the mid-twenties. 10 to 25 helps adults develop an ear for the distinction between the best and incorrect approach to respect younger folks and keep away from irritating patterns of miscommunication and battle.

Anybody can undertake the mentor mindset by following a couple of extremely efficient and easy-to-learn practices equivalent to validating younger folks’s views (reasonably than dismissing them), asking them questions (reasonably than telling them what to do), being clear about your beliefs and targets (reasonably than assuming that they may precisely guess your ideas), and holding them to excessive requirements (reasonably than coddling them). Yeager’s scientific experiments have proven these practices cut back all kinds of conduct issues, together with faculty dropout, unhealthy consuming, stress, purposelessness, psychological well being issues, and extra.
One of many greatest misconceptions about mentoring is that it takes up an excessive amount of time. Quite the opposite, those that use the mentor mindset find yourself with extra time. By means of back-and-forth conversations, younger folks really feel empowered, and managers can switch accountability to them. Younger folks on this age group are poised to study, develop, and attain unimaginable issues—if solely we are able to faucet into the essential neurobiological techniques that drive their motivation and conduct.

Irresponsible For You To….. NOT Read It
It is irresponsible for Adults to NOT read “10 to 25 The Science of Motivating Young People” by David YeagerThat is…. only if you consider yourself an Adult. A Parent. A Coach. A LeaderIn fact I think adolescents, and young adults should buy it for their Parents – Drop it on the table, say “Here’s your roadmap. I’m not an idiot. Let me know when you’ve read it” And walk out of the room. The (10-25) are directed & driven by a force greater than your knowledge of what is best for them.Let’s put it this way…your kid isn’t walking out the door w/out his/her jacket on in 20 degree weather b/c they are stupid and unaware and “kids these days”.As it explains in detail – through years and years of rigorous research woven into incredible storytelling by David – your words, your style, your influence hit the brain of humans aged 10-25 in ways directed by science, not by your love or your caring or what you know.Through storytelling, he gives us real tools for how to make life easier in what we’re trying to accomplish by influencing the age group under our watch. For those Growth Mindset and Grit fans out there, through his close work with Carol Dweck, he introduces the “Mentor Mindset” which calls for still setting very high standards, but along with high support.Thank you for this great work Dr. David Yeager.P.S. *Don’t be thrown off by the 25yr-old lid and think it’s “too late” for you.It relates across so many levels.

Must-read for Parents, Teachers, Managers, and Anyone who regularly engages with young people
I originally purchased the book on Audible, but had to order the hardcover as well because there are so many sections that I will go back to in my work with K-12 school districts. I taught for 12 years and now work with school districts implementing significant change efforts to raise expectations for students. Yeager provides a way out of the culture war (“Enforcers” vs. “Protectors”) within education. His overview of the “Mentor Mindset,” the research case justifying it, and how it plays out across sectors and situations is an inspiration with a clear path for implementation. I noticed a few critical reviews emphasizing that the book should have been shorter. I wholeheartedly disagree. The internet is full of articles, what distinguishes a book like this one is the depth and the many relevant examples provided across sectors. Different examples will be more relevant to different readers, and that is the point!

Excellent content with application capacity!
I loved the way Dr. Yeager provided the content and practical application components to translate into practice. In education and life in general, we look for silver bullets in the form of programs when adjusting practices and approaches like he suggests is where the magic happens.I also liked the stories around those perceived tough love situations that we have been told were the foundation of improving opportunities for others were really centered around high expectations and high support. I look forward to trying to apply these priniciples and practices.

Groundbreaking and Clear
Refreshingly discards the often patronizing and discounting view that humans under 25 are somehow âcognitively immatureâ as their minds grow. By doing so, Yeager shows how the talents and brains of 10 to 25 year-olds can be respected because of their unique stage of cognition. Yeager convincingly proves with both evidence and easy to-read anecdotes that âmentoringâ is not only a better way to lead, but also a better way to parent. Yeager illustrates an intellectually flexible âthird-termâ option poised between, but also borrowing elements from, the stale binary of too-permissive leadership and too-punitive leadership. The result is a strategy-based guidebook that produces immediate effects in challenging humans who are 10 to 25 years old to reach their potentialâand supporting their success to meet those challenges.

While this book did not deliver the tangibleness I was looking for, it was certainly filled with facts and examples of this age demographic.

Full of Wisdom
I wish that I had read this book prior to my daughter becoming a teenager. Initially I listened to the audiobook, then I came back and bought this hardcopy as well. That’s how highly I think of it.

The author has a good insight about young people which is applicable for everybody who has kids or deals with young people at work. The problem is that there is absolutely no reason why this book has 380 pages. The concept is clear on the page #100. The rest is just the torure of the reader.I would recommend the author to re-edit the book and make 100 page second eddition – it would be the bestseller.
