My review from the trenches.
In order to successfully review this book, I first need to convey a large conviction gained through almost 25 years experience in business management. Here it comes folks..This book is for serious leaders only.If you are cruising along, and think you have nothing to learn, then don’t bother. However, if you care about your performance as a Manager, and wish to continue learning, improving and bettering yourself professionally, this book is perfect.”our people are our greatest asset”… We have all heard it, though it has fast become an ancient metaphor in our world of “technological solutions”,yet, regardless of what we think to strive to; the truth is, “we are what we do.”This reality commutes from the newest staff member in ones organization to its executive.Failing to recognize this in our business means we are losing money like water through a sieve. The Author has both recognized this, and provided a solution that builds on a foundation of Nine Minutes spent once a week with your people to sharpen, hone, and solidify your staff. After reading through this publication twice, I believe that implementing the steps described by the author will actually improve profit to your business. Here is why.We live in a world where an entire new industry of head hunters have created a billion dollar a year business around moving your people around for profit. The success of this industry reveals to us that there is a serious gap in our understanding of the actual costs of loosing good people. We train invest and condition our people, and then lose them like ripe apples on a low hanging branch because we don’t know how to keep them.Too often, when faced with the demand of increasing profit and effectiveness, business leaders look towards engineering solutions, better machines, production line efficiencies, and even technological “gimmicks” for improvements. Most organizations, when scrutinized with actual costs in mind, reveal that the greatest expense fiscally is payroll !The payroll represents the people who create the motion in business that brings profit. If payroll was not a critical element, globalized outsourcing would not be one of the most solid methods if ramping fiscal profit. This is a massive problem in business today that is often directly fuelled through the lack of experience and competence of business leaders.James Robbins book addresses the roots of this condition, and provides easy, and instant solutions to gaining confidence in your own leadership by making your people effective, fluid, and most of all, stable entities within your organization. In my industry, so many people think of attaining a management position within their organization as a form of paid retirement where one can commute expertise as employees to their subordinates. This is done in full view of owners and executives who themselves often make the same mistakes. If you look at it this way, it makes no sense at all, yet we do it every day.The reality of mid level, and in some cases even higher level management positions is that they are often attained as a reward for performance and tenure; rather than skill and performance being an actual Manager.I believe that this condition has existed since the beginning of time, and will plague us to the end of days. This being said, the reality of my earlier comment regarding retention, head hunters, and outsourcing becomes even more poignant in the context of what Nine Minutes on Monday is about. This is where the book comes in.Nine Minutes on Monday is an easy to read recipe for replacing problems with a plan. The author James Robbins skillfully uses the metaphor of his own experiences towards the development of a simple and effective leadership acumen. Where he lacks the metaphor, his personal formula was to climb a mountain.. a real mountain, which is to say, he travels to a different country, finds a huge mountain, and actually climbs it.Though most of us will never do this physically, the practice of reflecting upon our own personal challenges in business as mountains, which they really seem to be; creates a landscape for the professional reader to begin converting ones own personal experiences into useful tools of leadership in business. The book sets the reader up in the early chapters with a select group of references towards sound leadership practice, and then lays out Nine easy steps to bring the leader from the position of “Static” management, to “Dynamic” leadership. The greatest result offered to the reader is that the “Nine Steps” conveyed in the book not only empower a greater sense of purpose and stability in ones staff, but actually release the pressure of management from the one to the many. When the burden of success lays upon the shoulders of an individual leader, that leader, especially if untrained, can certainly crack and break. When the burden of success is carried on the shoulders of many, it becomes light, attainable, and easy to handle. “To lead people, walk beside them … As for the best leaders, the people do not notice their existence. The next best, the people honor and praise. The next, the people fear; and the next, the people hate … When the best leader’s work is done – the people say, ‘We did it ourselves!'” — Lao TsuNine Minutes on Monday is a comfortable and sincere read. It provides a solid addition of growth to the serious management professional with its concepts and ideas. Though a new publication, it soundly echoes successful concepts found in the publications of authors like Covey, Lansing and Wooden.Cameron C. FryBusiness Development / FulfillmentE.S. Fox Ltd

Practical advice wrapped into a simple system
Having read several leadership books, I find this one to be the most straight-forward/practical. Nine minutes on Monday is all it takes to plan your week to ensure you’re leading and not idling. Ideal for the novice manager, but enough here that even a seasoned pro can probably get a good refresher.Pro:+ Emphasizes practical leadership techniques+ Good end of chapter synopsis with though-evoking questions+ Concise text makes its points in about 200 pages+ Decent number of references+ Quite quotable+ Teaches the reader a method for creating high-performing teams with minimal time investment+ Good ideas for implementing the system a little at a timeCon:- References their web site, which requires (free) registration using your email address… items there could (should) have be added to the book- Doesn’t offer much on the topic of barriers/barrier breaking, relying mostly on the time challenge of leading… some time spent on managing a hyperactive or controlling boss, among other topics, would be usefulBottom line: Recommended. Very good.

The best book on leadership I have read to date.
The best book on leadership I have read to date. I was promoted today to a first line supervisory position, and am fortunate that I found the book and nine key concepts. The concepts along with a toolbox that you can access online will help me be accountable to keep on track with my main job…leading people. The book gives great insight into human behavior and is written in an entertaining and engaging way. James uses clever stories to illustrate leadership truths throughout the book that have helped me grasp and retain the concepts he is conveying. He is a great teacher and communicator. Lessons learned from the book have already helped me introduce myself to the team in a positive way starting on day one!

Great book with a very effective message
I am a practicing manager for a number of years. I think this is a great book with a really effective message. Like many other leadership books, you can argue that much of the information is common sense. However, like “Getting Things Done” or “7 Habits”, it is how this information is presented and the approach that makes the material worthwhile. If you like audiobooks, this book is one which converts well to that format.I recommend this book for any supervisor.

This should be called Leadership 101!!
This is an excellent book for all Managers or Supervisors who want to become Leaders. The book is laid out in an easy to follow fashion, and I love the personal stories that are interspersed in the book.If you can’t find 9 minutes at the beginning of your work week to improve your leadership and most importantly enhance your relationships with those who work for you, then you might want to find another vocation.

It’s written well and in an accessible manner. Even though I have only used a couple of these techniques so far, I have a feeling that I understand where these would fit in and I definitely see myself starting to use more and more.

is leadership. In modern times, too many manager are too task focused. They are managing budgets, managing timesheets, managing project plans, managing paperwork and wading through meetings and emails. So what happened to the people? They got called resources and are now part of whatever methodology is flavour of the month. Now stop it!!! The workplace is not full of little worker ant “resources”. It is full of people. Each has a story, a motivation and is part of someone’s team. Leadership is the key to building and directing great teams. This book works on techniques which are simpler to apply because there is commonsense behind them. This is not management gobbledigook but a book for people who want to get the best out of their team by being a leader. If you are looking for some tools, techniques but most of all some awareness of leadership, then this is for you. Written in plain English as there is nothing to hide.

The style of this book annoyed the hell out of me from the first page – it’s very, very, very “American”. I didn’t enjoy that aspect of it and would’ve preferred a more down-to-earth approach that was half the length. It’s full of anecdotes (surely mostly fake, per all book of this ilk, they’re more like parables) that aren’t needed too, so that could cut it down to 25% of the length.I read it at a time that I was just beginning to manage both large projects and large teams – something I now do every day – so it was useful to me and made me see beyond formal process and into how to be a better person at doing the job of leading a team versus managing one. I don’t normally like leadership books – like any other task (which is all leadership is), there’s more than one method for doing it and more than one way to apply each method, so I abhor diktat that tells me how I “should” go about it. That said, this book kept me interested and I did learn from it. I’m sure to the more seasoned manager, a lot of the practical advise herein is old hat but I found it useful. A core point of the book is to encourage but never blame – if someone fails at a task it’s the manager who has failed by not supporting them in the right ways – something I try to keep central in my mind and something I wish more people would take heed of.I cannot comment on the free web tools that come with the book as I did not feel they would be useful so did not try them.
