Have an animal lover, get this book.
I have one of those children who goes through phases of different random animal obsessions. We checked this book out at the library and I decided we needed to have it because of all the questions I get about animals from my daughter. I do plan on using it to create homeschool unit studies for my children as well. It does not lack In information. I love how it is organized by animal species, shows a picture of the map where it is located, and how big they get in a snap shot.

Wonderful book, but some caveats
Without doubt, Animal deserves ample praise for its descriptions and photos of two thousand members of the world’s animals. One is immediately fascinated by its wealth of coverage. Every library should have a copy for people to browse through, but maybe not every home.
This is a big doorstopper of a book, nearly a foot long and weighing 6 pounds. Being a world survey, its coverage of each animal amounts to only a few paragraphs, and likely for only a few species from your own area. Much is necessarily omitted, and selectively. Perhaps that is expected, as this is a book for the general population, but you will want to seek out a book for the animals of your own country to learn more about them. Maybe that frog in your backyard is (probably) not listed, but heck, the book will tell you some fun facts about frogs. The photos, it deserves repeating, are fantastic.

Too Much “In The Weeds” For My Needs.
Although I suspected as much before I purchased this book, it really is more “written encyclopedia” than visual exploration of the thousands?/millions? of other species that inhabit this planet with us. Very broadly grouped into 6 primary chapters (ie. Mammals, Birds, Reptiles, Amphibians, Fishes and Inverterbrates), which are further subdivided along scientific classification lines, the book does not lend inself to easy searching/use by the average layperson. Thank goodness, though, there is a 22 page index to the book’s content – although looking up something like “Octopus” may disclose variations of which you were unaware and/or don’t care. Pictures do appear to be provided for each species discussed, though, of necessity, they’re pretty small. While a small quantity of full page photos do exist, I have to say that none are particularly remarkable. The sheer effort and research that went into producing this book is obviously enormous, and while I think this book would probly make a great gift for the budding biologist, or a limited reference for the already-established scientist, it is not really coffee-table material -it simply doesn’t have the great photography normally associated with such works.
