Spectacular Account of the Space Shuttle’s Role in Human Space Exploration
In his latest book, former NASA astronaut and high-time spacewalker Tom Jones offers an exquisite photographic record and moving narrative of the 135 Space Shuttle missions with quotes from members of the crews of every one of those missions. The program’s myriad triumphs and occasional tragedies are powerfully recalled in the personal vignettes. And the imagery that covers all of the missions is absolutely breathtaking. We see a crew attired in familiar bright orange spacesuits, brimming with the excitement of an impending launch as they stride from crew quarters on their way to board their mighty ship on a voyage of discovery into the final frontier. A photo shows Atlantis atop its booster streaking at supersonic speed on its way to orbit. In another image, the upgraded Hubble Space Telescope in all its majesty is shown being readied for release to capture views of the cosmos that have changed the way we think of our world. There is a snapshot of a smiling John Glenn in the SPACEHAB module during his historic return to space. Near the end of this compilation of stunning pictures and inspiring stories, there is a view from a dozen years ago of Endeavour docked to the maze-like framework of the completed International Space Station moving ever so purposefully in the stillness of space with an edge of the home planet visible in the background. In these trying times when the world is terribly stressed with wars raging and the dark side of human nature manifesting itself in multiple ways that bring into question what our future holds, this book reminds us of our shared humanity and the greatness that can be achieved when we work together in pursuit of noble objectives. The author’s description of his own experience delivering the Destiny lab to the ISS captures the ethos of the human adventure in space. He tells of maneuvering himself around the lab in the void of space “on the prow of a giant windjammer, falling swiftly, silently around Earth” as he “gazed a thousand miles out to the blue horizon, and 220 miles (354 kilometers) down to the Pacific beneath my boots.” For everyone who has ever wanted to sail on that far away ocean, this book is the next best thing to being there and offers hope for the possibility of a bright future!

    I LOVE this book!!
Hands down; this is my most favorite book about the Space Shuttle program. Author Tom Jones (Doesn’t his name bring back retro images of fictional space explorer characters? Tom Swift, Tom Corbett: Space Cadet, Flash Gordon, etc.)
Well, he’s a genuine astronaut and a darn good human being. Check out his other books. I loved this book for a number of reasons.
    1. I work at an air and space museum and have read almost every book about the space shuttle program. This is the top one on my list.
    2. I work for the 2-star general who investigated the Columbia accident.
    3. I was on an international air cadet exchange with Ilan Ramon, one of the astronauts who perished in the last Columbia mission.
    So, I’m shuttle committed.
Oh, the 4th reason? This is a fantastic book. It is a large format book with each mission chronologically captured on each opening of the pages. First is a summary, included is a crew photo, a bunch of photos from the mission and a few memories of crew members.
A semi-quick read. Tom captured the excitement of every mission and treated the 2 failed missions with deep and compassionate respect.
If you want to know a bit about how America soared in their space program and did not want to read a lot of blah, blah or a bunch of technological stuff – this is your book.
It’s my only coffee table book.
    Great work Tom!

    Excellent Stories from an Insider
Tom not only tells stories well, but he also assembles the final product in excellence. This is a wonderful service to those who flew the Space Shuttles and will serve as a great catalyst to them in coming years as they gather to swap stories as all fliers do. It will also serve as a valuable inspiration to all the young aspiring astronauts now preparing for future missions near and far. Very well done!

    Fun easy read
Fantastic stories with incredible photos. Super easy to read in bite sized pieces and very entertaining. I was bummed out when I got to the end and there were no more stories.

Find out things about space shuttle flights you didn’t know!
I have read a few other books about shuttle missions and they focus a little too heavily on the technical aspect of the shuttle and tend to be a bit too serious and at times boring. Don’t get me wrong – I love knowing what the specific impulse of the space shuttle main engine is. But this book brings to life real human stories about the fun, terror, camaraderie and the thrill of adventure of spaceflight aboard the Space Shuttle. These stories are often written by the crew member who wasn’t the Air Force test pilot – but the kid who studied science and realized that now with the advent of the space shuttle, space travel was something for them to pursue as well. Having followed the entire arc of the shuttle program through triumph to tragedy and back – I loved how this book filled in some bits of personal experience beyond the payload and flight number. DOD flights are still a black box in most cases.

A beautiful coffe table sized book
Former astronaut Tom Jones has written the best book covering all of the flights of the Space Shuttle program in digest format. THE size of the book is good for the many full-page photographs within.

    Very Special Book
I was thrilled to have this book when I met the author recently. He spoke about how the idea for this book came to him. He also explained the process used to create this very wonderful book. Excellent!

The book itself added personal reflections of astronauts of the shuttle to all the detail available about the shuttle missions themselves and provided interesting insights. It arrived promptly
