A book all children should read
As a high school teacher, I have students with autism in my classes every year. I have witnessed their peers be welcoming, kind, and accepting…and I have witnessed the opposite. If students were taught to view autistic friends through an empathetic, kind, and accepting lens by reading this book at an early age, the impact would last for all of their school years to come. As a parent of children at a school with a specialized autism program, Be a Friend helps me better understand some of the special needs my own children’s autistic peers may have, and how I can help them be good friends to those peers. The rhymes are accessible for my kids in Pre-K, 1st grade, and 3rd grade. The prose pages help both my kids and me understand a little more about their friends’ special needs. This is a book all children should read!

Excellent tool for creating a dialogue about differences
As a parent of neurotypical, elementary-aged kids, I love this book as a tool for opening up discussion with them that allows them to better understand classmates and–like the title–how to be a friend. The beautiful illustrations and short rhymes caught my children’s attention, and then the more detailed explanations of common traits of autism allowed us to have discussions that ended in some ‘ah ha!’ moments for my kids as they began to understand why a classmate only is ever interested in a specific topic. My favorite part was the discussion question that ended each page, as it allowed my kids to make connections to autistic peers feelings and experiences. This is a tool that I think we will come back to at different points, helping them develop empathy and perspective on differences.

Excellent resource for the Autism Community and beyond
As a Speech-Language Pathologist who works with a variety of age ranges, this is the resource I have been waiting for. This book allows for flexibility of use within clinic based therapy, school settings, and most importantly within families and their communities. Parents, teachers, and therapists, just to name a few, will find this is a wonderful way to introduce family members, peers, school staff, and therapy teams to your child and what makes them uniquely themselves. The ability to use this book to spark important conversations across settings is invaluable. Everyone should remember to âBe A Friendâ.

A must have book in schools!
So many students with autism get overlooked and their peers may not understand what they are going through. This book helps younger students learn about their peers with autism and how they can âbe a kind friend.â It is a must read! So well written by both authors!
