Braun Series 3 versus Series 9 – ready, fight!
I have been using the Braun Series 9 “fancy” electric razor for probably a decade. I have used it so much that the power button finally fell out, and while I can still activate the power it looks terrible. And I had reached the end of normal life for the shaver head, so I went out to Amazon to see what is out there. Much to my shock, a new replacemet shaver head costs MORE than an entire new Series 3 shaver AND head. I figured it was time to get a new shaver, and for the incredibly low price I felt I couldn’t go wrong.
Shown are photos of the two units head-to-head. If you research the Series 9, you will see that it costs 5 times what the Series 3 does. Is it worth it? Well … from a physical size standpoint, the Series 9 looks bigger, but if you look at the actual surface contact area on the head of the shavers, the Series 9 and Series 3 are IDENTICAL. Literally they are the exact same width.
But what about performance? Well, first let me say the Series 3 works great, especially for the money. There is no question that per dollar the Series 3 gives you BY FAR the biggest bang for the buck. However, honestly the Series 9 is probably 50 percent more powerful and faster. The little motor clearly runs at a much higher RPM, it doesn’t bog down as easily, and it just is simply much faster to use. A full daily shave that takes me about 2 minutes with the Series 3 could probably be done in about 90 seconds with the Series 9. Is it worth it to pay the extra for the Series 9? Certainly not to me. BUT I do acknowledge that the Series 9 is without a doubt just a better device … it isn’t just marketing hype.
Also note that both offer a little trimmer extension on the back. Funny enough, the Series 3 is actually larger and seems to work better than the Series 9 function in that department.
The Series 9 does have the moveable head, and that does make the shaving a little bit smoother, but certainly not worth the extra money in my opinion.
In summary: the Series 9 is a Ferrari, and the Series 3 is a Camaro. The Series 3 is still FAR better than other brands and styles of shavers I have tried over the years. If I am a techie billionaire, I’m definitely getting the Series 9. Otherwise, I’m a Series 3 guy for life and don’t mind the extra 30 seconds a day it takes to shave with the less powerful unit.

Great razor for the money
I haven’t used an electric razor for decades. I am very impressed and love some of the technology. First of all it’s waterproof so it’s easy to clean just by running it under water. The shave is good. It’s sometimes lacking on my neck but every few days I dry shave with a blade right after I do the electric if it doesn’t seem shaved close enough. That works just fine. I do wish it told you how many minutes left on a charge. I haven’t pushed it to where it has no charge but I do 7 shaves in a week and it still has a charge. All in all, a great razor for an inexpensive price.

Very good electric razor
I’ve had my razor for almost a year now and have almost nothing but positive things to say about it. The biggest thing that impresses me about it is how long it holds a charge. I put the razor on charge about once a week, but I think I could probably get away with charging it less than half that often. Biggest gripe about the razor is that it does a horrible job of getting rid of those fine little white hairs that aren’t as coarse as regular beard/moustache hairs. After shaving, I’ll often find one lone long white hair somewhere on my face or neck or sometimes a group of them. It’s easy enough to take the “shearing” blade to them later, but I find it embarrassing until I can get home. The shearing blade attachment is great for trimming up sideburns and eyebrows. I even use it for “manscaping” down south as well. LOL. Very good razor for the price. Well done, Braun!

We’re not in Germany any more
Got this Braun 310s to replace my not-quite-dead 10 yr old Braun 340 (discontinued).
After reading the reviews, I wanted to try Braunâs bottom-of-the-line for comparison,
and to see where the cost-cutting appears.
As an aside, I wonder if Braun really needs six different lines (Series 3,5,6,7,8,9) of electric shavers.
The 310âs goodness:
⢠Well it works fine, and features the same motor and drive mechanism as its Series 3 stablemates.
⢠Uses any Series 3 cassette heads. Comes with one 21b, but accepts the slightly better 32b/32s when needed.
⢠Charger adapter interchangeable with older Series 3 coil corded chargers, in both directions. All UL Listed.
⢠Charger w/cable lighter than old coil cord one (66g vs. 100g)
so save your old charger, and use the new one for travel.
⢠Body lighter than my old 340 (158g vs. 200g) but feels very solidly built.
⢠Wet or dry operation. Essentially dunk-proof. Looking into its charger port, it appears sealed.
⢠30-day Braun USA money back guarantee, 2-yr Braun USA limited warranty (excluding head)
Hereâs where the cost-cutting happened:
⢠No pop-up trimmer. If thatâs essential, look at the similar Braun 3040s.
⢠Slightly lower capacity battery (listed 30min vs 45min for its stablemates)
but still features quick 1-min charge to allow you to finish your shave.
⢠The only accessories provided are the charger, and a plastic head protector cap.
No oil, no brush, no travel case, nothing else.
The head protector cap does not extend to protect the power button as on some models.
⢠The blue side body is smooth plastic, the black grippy overmoulding runs down the center front.
This is the reverse of the old 340, and odd for something intended
to be used in a wet slippery environment.
⢠The charger feels less substantial, but of good quality,
features a straight 44 inch cable,
which is about the length of the old coil cable when fully extended.
Youâll likely want a velcro strap or rubber band to preclude travel-tangle.
The 310s will *not* run when plugged in to charge. So cordless-only operation.
This is not so much a bug as it is a safety feature
to avoid Braun granting a Darwin award to those who, in an AM rush to
shower&shave, might run an AC extension cord to the charger to the shaverâ¦
in the shower.
The instruction book actually addresses this, albeit not Darwin.
The LED will fast-flash when running low, and if it dies while youâre shaving,
a minute or so charge will actually give you enough runtime to finish.
Full charge from dead takes about an hour.
Braunâs dry-only shavers do run corded or cordless.
So my experiment in Braun cost-cutting has proved successful.
If you like the Series 3 heads, want wet-dry operation,
and donât miss the trimmer, the 310s does the job at a very decent price.

As a 53 year old who had been through all modes of shaving (except the legendary straight razor and leather strop) these are my observations.
The modern gold standard is the Double Edged blade (DE) based razors like the German Muhle R41 (Satan’s Razor), Merkur Futur (The Beast), Merkur 39C Slant Bar (The Sledgehammer).
These coupled with an Italian Omega Boar Hair Brush and British Shaving Creams (Truffit & Hill, Taylor of Old Bond Street or the Indian Biotique BioPalmyra etc) and Blades like the Japanese Feather, Russian 7 O’clock and Astra, Israeli Personna, Turkish Derby or the Indian 7 O’clock Platinum Black and Supermax Platinum Plus give you an unparalleled BBS (Baby Bottom Smooth) Finish. The GOLD STANDARD of shaving.
BBS – No stubble detected by running the back of the hand (or a woman’s cheek) over the entire shaved area. Passes even the Gillette Business card Test. (Google it). No 5 o’clock shadow (Google it) seen even till 10 PM.
A new Mach 3 or Fusion with Brush and Cream can help you achieve the next best level, the DFS (Damn Fine Shave). Smooth in most areas but stubble detected in hard to get areas. Excellent for most gentlemen (and ladies)
Then comes the SAS or the Socially Acceptable Shave. This is what the Braun Series 3 310s can easily manage.
Visibly clean shaven, but fails the “feel test”.
The outstanding part is that the Braun can easily get you to a SAS in less than 5 minutes covering upper and lower lips cheeks and neck. No Nick’s. No rednness. No rashes (after the first two conditioning shaves).
I have found that the rotary razors (I have a Panasonic Spinette) cause more irritation than the foil razors like the Braun, Panasonic and Remington.
When running late, I shave when on the pot. Best symbiotic use of time on two wasteful activities.
Best results are obtained when held perpendicular to skin with light pressure.
Light strokes WTG (With The Grain) and ATG (Against The Grain) will provide a smooth finish.
Works well for 3 – 4 mm long hair. Any longer, the stubble will not be cut efficiently. Use a trimmer to shorten hair and then shave.
Hope this helps.
