    She enjoyed it
This is a great toy. That said I got about 10 minutes of my 6 year olds attention with this. That might not seem like much, but it was a full 10 minutes of her learning to spell. I sent it home to her mom, and she will play with her as well as she can. Its easy to work with and read from. It’s pretty lightweight, but seems durable enough. Great value for what it is .

    Nephew loves it!
My nephew is an advanced age 6 and this is great for him and is something he can grow into for a few years. I had one as a kid too! It makes learning fun.

The voice is very similar if not the same as the original
This is close, and I mean really close to the old speak and spell from many, many years ago! I remember playing with this toy for hours on end as a child, and so I felt like I needed to get one for my great nephew. The monotonous, annoying voice that they use on this is almost identical if not the same one from the original speak and spell. I can’t tell for sure, but it seems almost like thia new speak and spell might be slightly smaller, or just weigh a little bit less than the original. I’m not exactly sure because I don’t have an old speaking spell to compare to but it definitely feels a little different. It doesn’t feel this solid as the original speaking spell did either, I’m definitely afraid to drop it and feel like I need to be cautious with it. My great nephew was not super into it, because they have way cooler toys in 2022, but to me this will always be a cool toy for me to play with even if he doesn’t enjoy it.

    Excellent customer service
I bought this for my then 6-year-old son for Christmas last year. We both enjoyed using it together (I had a TI Speak & Spell when I was a kid). As others have pointed out, the voice and display are modern-retro: not like the original, but not always easy to understand and read, either. However, overall it’s an enjoyable product, true to the original. After sitting on a shelf for a few months during the summer etc. we picked it up again recently, only to discover that the display was hard to read. We tried changing batteries, pressing the reset button, etc. I finally submitted a message with photos to Basic Fun’s customer service. They responded overnight, saying: “We were concerned to receive the below information as we take every possible care to ensure that our products meet with our customer’s expectations in all respects. We are shipping you a Speak and Spell replacement today – Fedex tracking # below. I have reviewed the item myself and it is working properly.”I was (and still am) floored. Honestly, I didn’t expect much of a response at all. We’re talking about a $35 children’s toy, but they responded like it was a premium product, no questions asked. You’ve got to give them an A+ for that alone.

Nothing compared to the 80s original
I got this for my kids because I had fond memories of the one I had as I was a kid. But the voice on this one is SO HARD to understand. And quiet. Not only that, but words that have been programmed in, are words with homonyms. For example, “Level A” has; “four”, “for”, “to”, “two”, etc…The kids get so frustrated with it that they barely use it anymore.

A Nostalgic Try, but Not Quite the Original
I recently picked up the retro-inspired Speak & Spell for my kids, hoping it would bring back some of that classic 80s charm. While it does capture some of the nostalgia with its iconic graphics and gameplay, it’s just not quite the same as the original. The voice, while trying to replicate the classic speech synthesizer, ends up being more annoying than endearing. It’s a bit disappointing that it doesn’t fully capture the essence of the original, but despite this, it has proven to be a useful learning tool for my younger kids. They enjoy the various play modes and the different challenge levels, which keep them engaged. Overall, it’s a good educational toy, though it falls short of the classic experience I remember.

I had one of these when I was around 6 years old and it helped my spelling immeasurably. Years later I would be diagnosed as having Dyslexia (as an adult) and the assessor believed that my time with the Speak & Spell was what made it so hard for my learning challenge to be discovered. Essentially, I had gotten used to seeing the words as an image, which is why I can spell well, despite having some issues reading from certain fonts and page colours. I brought this for my 6 year old granddaughters who adore it and have barely put it down since they got one for Christmas. To see the joy on their faces as they play with the Speak & Spell (even with the authentic American accent and spelling quirks), takes me right back to a happier time in my early youth. It makes their enjoyment of it feel so validating and is a testament to the effectiveness of the product and its design. Kids everywhere have way more advanced screens and sound on the most common of devices, but there is something to be said for the benefit of nostalgia, intertwined with shared child hood experiences that have 40 years between them. Couldn’t recommend enough.

The box says original voice synthesiser but it doesn’t sound like the old one at all. The display is different to original too, worse even! How’s that possible? Feel a bit deceived after spending good money. No really happy with the purchase. It’s not like the original, if that’s what you’re expecting. What do I do now?

I just had this delivered today- it came with the batteries installed but I couldn’t turn it on. I did some googling and came across the tip about the reset button in the back- that did the trick and it seems to be working great. Kids love the “code” function and hangman. They plan on playing a spy game with the codes. Both my 6 year old and my 9 year old can use it for spelling as well- as there are 4 levels of words. They also love that it is the toy from “E.T.”Compared to the original- it is definitely lighter, and the letters seem to be bigger on the display. I personally love that unlike most of their electronics- they are not connected to wifi.Update- haven’t used this much over the past while but now not all the keys work. Only keys located in centre or the device are working. Disappointed.
