Game Changing Guide on Running Performance & Injury
I first heard of Dr. Matt through the Trail Runner Nation podcast. I had been battling some severely tight quads and a little hip bursitis and I was looking for some answers to my issues leading up to a 200k ultramarathon in Ireland. I knew I had the fitness to complete the run but I wanted to try and alleviate some of the tightness and pain I was experiencing before taking on the challenge. A big topic on the podcast was âthe couch stretchâ so I gave this a shot when I got home and to my surprise it really helped to release my quads and hip flexors which provided immediate relief. I continued to do the couch stretch leading up to my race and I was able to run 200k through the mountains in Ireland with 19,350ft of elevation change with no issues. Since the race I have reached out to Dr. Matt and he has been extremely helpful with answering my questions and helping me become a stronger runner. I cannot recommend the author and the book enough!!

NOT just another repackaging of the same ‘How To Run’ book!
(FYI – I purchased this book from Dr Matt’s website, but I am a verified buyer.)
I don’t usually write reviews, but I think it’s important for runners of any level to explore this book. From sprinter to ultra-runners, beginner to veteran, this book is an important tool for incorporating the proper skills, strengthening for speed and endurance and injury prevention as well.
I’ve been running for 35 years now. Mostly a marathoner (close to 60 now, the bulk have been between 2:50 and 3:10). As I got older the lack of knowing the proper skills caught up to me. Just going out and putting in training miles (still doing LSD, tempos, hill and track work) and lifting some weights does not work for the long haul – unless you are truly gifted, and then it’s just not sustainable. Eventually poor posture and repeated common mistakes I just wasn’t in tune with took its toll, and I just felt broken. For last several years I’ve been studying and reading and trying to learn what I’m doing wrong and how I can fix it while I still have some potentially good running years ahead of me. I have quite a library of books and videos.
I first heard Dr Matt on a podcast, and after a little bit I knew he was the real deal. Besides his educational background, work as a coach and being a long time distance himself, he also mentioned learning from a couple heavyweight contemporaries that have been very helpful to me over the years – Jay Dicharry and Kelly Starrett. By the time the podcast was over, I was all in to buy his book and start from the beginning. Again. I think the biggest takeaway from his book, for me, is that you can see elements from Dicharry and Starrett within the bigger picture of Built to Run.
If you’re looking for a comprehensive resource of learning the proper skills (and also Why you’re learning it), strengthening and mobility more specific to runners, and injury prevention, look no further. I highly recommend this book. Take your time, read through it, then go back and go through the drills and exercises. It won’t just be another one of those how-to-run books in your library collecting dust!
PS – as a bonus, Dr Matt also sends out helpful emails occasionally with more information, sometimes it’s just additional and sometimes based on questions he’s getting from the book. Very helpful!!

If you run, this book is a must have
I bought this book for my husband after he had a piraformis injury. I have found great exericises (like the couch stretch) that I have added to my mobiility routine as I train for my fall mararthon. The illustrations are great and he provides detail explanations. I am a big fan of Jay Dicharry’s books but this one is great for prehab/rehab.

Amazing book for ALL runners
I bought this book after hearing about it on the trail runner nation podcast. I have been running ultras for 7 years, but have taken about a year off due to back pain that showed up as I ramped up mileage (and passed the 40 year old mark).
I read through the book, and have highlighted and implemented everything noted in the low back pain section. Iâm completely pain free and am happy to report that I finished a 50K this past Saturday, beat my previous time on this course by 35 minutes, and was fully recovered by Tuesday!
I give all the credit to doing the stretches and exercises from this book! Thanks for writing it-Iâd say you have no idea how much it means to me, but given your background noted in the book I think you have a pretty good idea!

An Investment in our Health
This book’s price seemed expensive to me at first, but now I think it is a great value for what you get. It’s like having a professional Physical Therapist with you, showing you exactly what to do, depending on whatever condition you have. It’s very well organized & easy to find just the information you need. I was in a very bad car accident 3 weeks ago, and it’s really helped me gain mobility and alleviated the back pain I have felt. I think, despite the bad accident (hospital for 5 hours, $33k cost), I may still be able to run a 100 miler in 2 weeks. We’ll see. But following the prescriptive exercises in this book has helped enormously. I highly recommend the book, and I know it will be helpful to me in years to come as various issues come up, as well as for preventing future injuries.

Excellent for anyone who wants to be more active
This book is amazing for people who have chronic pain when setting out to be more active. As a nurse practitioner, I use this book for my patients and have recommended to many of my friends. It is easy to understand and well written! Highly recommend!!

A Runners Must Have!
This book is a very detailed guide to running. I wish I had it years ago when I had some injuries that kept me from running as much as I wanted. I don’t run very long distances any more but I still enjoy running! Thank you for a book that will keep me going.
