Advice from the World’s Crack Climbing Experts!
I learned to do ring locks (ratchets) using this book! I find it most useful as a glossary of crack climbing techniques for weird situations. It’s a great reference for naming different crack climbing techniques, and I think it should become the standard for this. When I get stuck on a crack climbing project, I open this book for ideas about how Pete Whittaker (the author and an eminent crack climbing expert) would approach the problem. The illustrations and text are very complete in their descriptions of climbing techniques. You probably don’t need this to learn to hand jam. But it probably has 10 different ideas for that offwidth crack section that has you stumped. Now if only it was smaller so that I could bring it on climbs with me…

Exactly what I was looking for!
I’m currently working on an indoor roof crack at my home gym, that has not seen FA (first ascent) since the gym has opened. I have even gone to the trubel of making a replica of the crack in my backyard, but I have been having difficulty find the information I needed online to climb roof crack more efficiency. after reading a large part of this book, especially the section on roof cracks, I can honestly say that this book has taught me a lot of things that I’ve never even thought of. This book book is amazing and I definitely recommend it to anyone who is just starting out in crack climbing or has been crack climbing for years. There’s so much in this book from beautiful illustration and photos to the humerus descriptions! Love it!

    Improve your Crack Technique
This book has already helped me become a better crack climber and I have only had it a month or so. As it says in the book, this is not really meant to be read in one sitting but rather periodically read and applied. If this sounds good to you, this book will serve you well on your next project.

Wealth of knowledge on the subject
This book goes into DEPTH about different situations and tools you’ll need to scale that wall.In my area, there’s not many routes with a lot of jamming, so my knowledge on the subject would be extremely hindered and likely solely relying on unorganized YouTube videos.Heck, even if crack climbing was abundant here, this book would help my knowledge exponentially faster than if I were to rely on teaching myself. Of course the book doesn’t guarantee you’ll be a professional after reading it, but as G.I. Joe used to say: “Knowing is half the battle”

A great climber gift! So educational + aesthetic, perfect for the crag or a coffee table!
I love this book! It’s extremely interesting and entertaining – I love the little climber profiles throughout, and so educational! It’s a fun book to have in our house in Moab for people to flip through, and I’ve found myself opening it up when I can’t figure out specific beta for a weird crack. I highly reccomend this book, it would make a great gift for any climber!

Massive step up from older manuals
Pete did a really good job with this book. I’m a moderate trad climber and this book has already made a big difference with my crack technique. Some crack techniques are intuitive, but most aren’t. This book gives very detailed instructions with useful graphics to convey good crack technique. Older climbing manuals don’t give great instructions when it comes to crack climbing. If you want to be better at fisting a crack then you have to get this book.

WTH… how is there this much about crack climbing I didn’t know?!
I’ve been climbing outdoors for 12 years, so I got this book to see what I was missing. Apparently the answer was “almost everything”. This guy has packed in every last thing known by humans about crack technique into one book. Foot stacks, baggy fist jams, and other stuff I didn’t know existed.Anyways, if you have any interest in trad climbing, buy the book. I was on a route at the Red 2 weeks ago, working a roof, and a crack was too narrow for a fist jam, and too wide for a hand jam. Just about ready to look for a different move, then remembered the baggy fist deal, and tada – I’m good to go.Also, there’s about 20 pages just on taping up your hands. Again, I can’t find any reason not to have this on the bookshelf.

    The ultimate reference
Great book, think of it like a reference. See a crack you want to climb, figure out the size, refer to the book then send!

Wow, I thought I understood crack climbing technique, but this book kind of blew my mind. It will really take your game to the next level, whether you climb finger cracks or offwidth. Now I have so many more options for jamming, resting and overall climbing techniques in any size of crack. I also really enjoy the author’s dry sense of humour which keeps the content interesting – it can be a lot to wrap your mind around if you read the book straight through, so I tend to bounce around and read sections depending on what I’m working on at the moment. I haven’t found a resource that goes this in depth into crack climbing technique, and would definitely recommend it to any trad climbers!
