Very Enjoyable Book and Series
Death On the Downs is the 2nd book in the Fethering Series. Am enjoying this series very much. Carole and Jude are recent neighbors and have opposite personalities. Carole is rather uptight and quite proper. Jude whose background we know little about at this point is a free spirit. Carole stumbles upon a skeleton when seeking shelter during a rainstorm in a old barn. She was walking along the downs of Weldisham. That starts the adventure of solving the mystery. Enjoyed the humor of Carole’s date which she goes on to find information about the murder. We can read Carol’s thoughts during this date. I thought Simon Brett did a good job of interpreting a woman’s mind when she was in a situation that was less than desirable for her. There were various suspects so it held one’s interest. Was not a mystery where I had everything figured out early in the book. It read fast because I enjoyed it and wanted to find out who the murderer was. There were layers of crime involved in Weldisham. Looking forward to reading the next in the series “The Torso in the Town.”

Good read
Simon Brett’s writing ranges from excellent to medium. His plots are always good, but sometimes his dialog is boring and unrealistic, especially in the earlier books in this series. I didn’t notice that with DEATH ON THE DOWNS, though; I liked it.

A good cozy mystery
Really have enjoyed first two in the series and looking forward to the rest. The description of the country makes me curious to visit the locales

Good Character Development from The Body on the Beach
It would be a mistake to read this book without first reading The Body on the Beach in which amateur detectives and neighbors Carole Seddon and Jude (no last name) meet one another. If opposites attract, these two fiftyish women make that point. Carole is a retired Home Office bureaucrat who likes things tidy and prefers her distance from people. Jude is friendly, messy, and plunges right in. That contrast was well established in The Body on the Beach. In Death on The Downs, the two characters begin to develop other facets. But if you haven’t read the first book, you’ll miss the relevance of much of that character development.Carole Seddon once again stumbles on evidence of foul play when she uncovers a human skeleton while seeking shelter from the rain in an old barn. The local police are very sympathetic and even offer her counseling. Carole learns that there’s been a young woman missing for four months. Could that be the victim? When Carole shares her experiences and theory with Jude, Jude is floored. She knows the missing woman!Carole begins to exploit her developing social skills to find out more about what’s going on in Weldisham, where she found the bones. Jude uses her alternative therapy contacts (and a little blackmail) to check out other lines of inquiry.Carole knows she’s on the right track when she begins to receive threats. Before the story is over, she’ll pay a high price for her curiosity.Readers who enjoyed The Body on the Beach will find Death on the Downs to be an easier book to read, with more interesting action. This series is well worth reading and I hope you enjoy it!

Another cozy visit to Fethering
I had so enjoyed Brettâs first Fethering mystery I decided to read another one in quick successionâbefore I forgot who the characters were. Brettâs descriptions of English village life from the point of view of a 50ish widow are entertaining. Slightly acerbic, but with enough characters whom I would love to be friends with, and with a dog. This mystery is a bit far-fetched; I certainly donât read the books for the quality of the mystery. But if you like feeling as if you are in a corner of an English pub, watching strange events unfold, knowing that all will turn out well for the intrepid heroine, this series is the ticket.

One of the best in the Fethering series.
Death on the Downs by Simon Brett. This was one of the earliest Fethering mysteries and in my opinion one of the best.Carole has stumbled into an old decrepit barn when she uncovers bones that appear to be human. The local constable takes the bones in to be analyzed to find exactly who they belonged to by possibly using DNA after finding the age of the bones and who went missing at that time. Soon Carole and her next door neighbor Jude are in another whodunit together gathering clues. The clues keep on coming and the suspects keep on mounting but none of them lead to the real culprit.I loved this story and found the characters to be believable and interesting with complex lives. I’ve truly enjoyed the Carole & Jude Fethering mysteries and plan on continuing to follow as long as Simon Brett keeps on writing another sensational story.

The local gossip mill says the bones are those of Tamsin Lutteridge.Carole tells the police that the missing girl had been seeing Jude for help dealing with a sleep syndrome.Jude takes matters into her own hands and discovers Tamsin is alive and well but hiding from her father. Now the due have two mysteries to unravel. Why is Tamsin hiding? and Whose bones were in the bags?A fun, read with out the punch of the first in the series.Nash Black, author of SINS OF THE FATHERS.

Another mystery set in West Sussex. Amusing quick read. Part of a series, but works as a stand alone.
Heather M Voskuyl –
Whilst another review criticised the formulaic plot line, I think that Brett applies the formula very well. The central characters grow as a result of their experiences and their diversity engages the reader. Lots of small details and a wry sense of humour added to this readerâs enjoyment.

A great second instalment to the feathering mystery series .Cannot wait to read the 3rd book, hoping that Jude opens up to her friend more next time?

I had read the other books in the series but somehow missed this one. I love the characters and the soap opera of their lives. Not great literature but when on holiday you want to be entertained and Brett always does that for me.
Mr. Kenneth D. Jones –
The second book in the ‘ Feathering’ mystery series has Carole and her friend and neighbour Jude up to their eyes in another murder mystery. Starting as a cozy tale, Simon Brett ramps up the tale to a splendid and satisfactory ending. If you are a fan of ‘Midsomer Murders’ these books will be right up your street. Cozy it may be, but a real page turner, with characters that are becoming friends. The books may be read in any order, but I suggest starting at the first book and following on from there, highly recommended. I cannot wait to start on the third book in the series.
