I hear all the time about the importance of cardio but rarely have I heard conversations centered around strength. There simply aren’t enough people out there writing and talking about the importance of muscle and strength as we age and so it was refreshing to pick up a book that speaks directly to all of us men and women heading towards, or are well into, our second half of life.What I loved most about this book was two-fold.#1.) The author broke down the misconceptions around strength training. For example, as an over-50 guy myself I was nervous engaging in strength training for fear that I would get hurt and end up with more back pain than I was already in. But the opposite happened. Once I started deadlifting and squatting, my back pain started to significantly disappear. I got stronger and I got stronger quickly. I wouldn’t have thought this was possible for my age but I was wrong.#2.) The author lays out a strength program so that you can get started on getting stronger immediately. This part is important as it’s so easy to read a book and move on to the next book – and forget most everything you just learned from the book you just finished! I love books that help you and enable you to take action now.Throughout the book the author also outlines all the other benefits of strength training that come along with you getting stronger. And these benefits are enormous.I’m 53 years old and wish I had started strength training years ago. But I’m grateful to have learned that I’m still capable of being the strongest I’ve ever been in my entire life. How cool is that?!

I find the key takeaways at the end of each chapter particularly useful. Michael has a no nonsense, sensible approach, without gimmicks. There is a basic routine to follow to include all muscle groups. You can adapt it to your own ability by using the easier or more challenging alternatives and changing the weight, number of reps and sets. The exercises are clearly explained and illustrated, including what to do and what not to do. I have been using the exercise routine for four weeks and now know it by heart. I am not new to exercise, but I am a 66 year old female, who was beginning to feel flabby and lazy. I am already feeling stronger, have more vitality and am sleeping better. I am also maintaining my enthusiasm because the routine is simple and does not take up a large chunk of my day. Thank you Michael from one very satisfied customer.

Then this is a good book to start with.Each chapter is well presented and contains no unnecessary waffle, personal anecdotes or anything of such nature. The information presented is direct and to the point with clear reasoning behind it’s inclusion. I especially liked the chapters on mastering various exercises (chapter 4) and creating a workout routine suitable for the over 40’s, (chapter 6).There could have been more exercises included in this book and some greater detailing into creating a comprehensive workout plan from scratch would have been nice, but there are other, better books for that.Overall, I have found this book to provide a good level of information aimed squarely at those entering or returning to strength training.
