If train is wholesome (so good for you!), why do many individuals dislike or keep away from it? These partaking tales and explanations will revolutionize the way in which you consider exercising – to not point out sitting, sleeping, sprinting, weight lifting, enjoying, combating, strolling, jogging, and even dancing.

“Strikes an ideal stability of scholarship, wit, and enthusiasm.” (Invoice Bryson, New York Occasions best-selling writer of The Physique)

If we’re born to stroll and run, why do most of us take it simple at any time when doable?Does working damage your knees?Ought to we do weights, cardio, or high-intensity coaching? Is sitting actually the brand new smoking? Are you able to drop some pounds by strolling? And the way can we make sense of the conflicting, anxiety-inducing details about relaxation, bodily exercise, and train with which we’re bombarded?

On this myth-busting e book, Daniel Lieberman, professor of human evolutionary biology at Harvard College and a pioneering researcher on the evolution of human bodily exercise, tells the story of how we by no means developed to train – to do voluntary bodily exercise for the sake of well being. Utilizing his personal analysis and experiences all through the world, Lieberman recounts with out jargon how and why people developed to stroll, run, dig, and do different crucial and rewarding bodily actions whereas avoiding pointless exertion.

Exercised is entertaining and enlightening but in addition constructive. As our more and more sedentary existence have contributed to skyrocketing charges of weight problems and illnesses similar to diabetes, Lieberman audaciously argues that to turn into extra energetic we have to do greater than medicalize and commodify train.

Drawing on insights from evolutionary biology and anthropology, Lieberman suggests how we will make train extra satisfying, quite than shaming and blaming individuals for avoiding it. He additionally tackles the query of whether or not you may train an excessive amount of, at the same time as he explains why train can scale back our vulnerability to the illnesses largely more likely to make us sick and kill us.

    Great read
A very good and readable account of the science of exercise, highlighted by accounts of the author’s anthropological studies among indigenous peoples on several continents. This book may not be for readers who want unambiguous instructions about the why and how of exercise, because the science is not complete, but that’s what I find engaging — his self-deprecating modesty and the absence of “fluff” or advice not based on evidence. One issue I have is that Lieberman gives a misleading account of a study of the effects of having a high coronary artery calcium score (CAC). He gives the impression that having a high CAC score doesn’t matter so long as you exercise a lot. That’s not true: Among those who exercise a lot, those with low CAC scores had much better survival than those with high CAC scores. The message of the study was a different one: Amng those with high CAC scores, those who exercise a lot have better survival than those who don’t. So the best survival is among those who both exercise a lot AND have low CAC scores. The other, less important mistake that I saw was his statement that the words ‘exercise’ amd ‘play’ were not in Samuel Johnson’s dictionary. They certainly were, from the first edition onwards. Exercise “Habitual action by which the body is formed to gracefulness, air, and agility”. Play: “To sport; to frolick; to do something not as a task, but for a pleasure.” I wonder if Lieberman looked up the words in an abridged version.

Things About Exercise You Would Never Have Thought Of
This book goes beyond the usual statistics about exercise and why everyone should do it. Mr. Lieberman gives his personal experiences with exercise, many of which are quite amusing. He sympathizes with those who have difficulty formulating the tenacity to exercise regularly. The merits of various forms of exercise are considered, but no particular form is rated higher than any other. Mr. Lieberman affirms that cardiovascular and resistance activity are equally important while recognizing that people are inclined to prefer one over the other. A particularly interesting and helpful chapter covers the role exercise has in overcoming diseases such as diabetes. Another chapter endorses the vital importance of exercise for seniors. Walking, a sometimes underrated exercise, gets Mr. Lieberman’s full endorsement. “Exercised: Why Something We Never Evolved to Do is Healthy and Rewarding” is a delightful read which takes readers down paths they did not expect but will be pleased to follow.

    Why We Should Keep Moving
My first reaction was thinking; “Not another book telling me to exercise!”. However, I found this book surprisingly enjoyable and informative. Professor Lieberman uses historical and anthropological perspectives which I found really interesting. Overall, Lieberman gives the reader an understandable, well written discussion about why and how we should exercise, and also explains why most of us don’t really feel the need to. This book is very broad ranging, as Lieberman tackles numerous controversial topics concerning human physical activity. Lieberman avoids getting bogged down with the usual intellectual squabbles among scientists as he offers wisdom based on science, including his research, and common sense. I learned many interesting insights, including:1) How human evolution gave us instincts which lead to desires today to overeat and under exercise.2) Understanding the myths vs the actual science about the health benefits of exercise.3) The evolutionary sources of humans’ performance in sports, especially running.4) The importance of managing sleep and stress, as part of overall health.5) How to create a sensible exercise program to promote better health.

A good reminder of the benefits of moving your body
Like many books on exercise, this book will likely be read by people who already do, or have done exercise and just like reading about the positive effects of it. At least that’s why I got this book. Every page reinforced that what I have been doing for a long time is beneficial. But like a book I read years ago, Aerobics by Kenneth Cooper, that actually got me off the couch and started me down that path, this book could actually have that similar effect on some, much to their benefit. After reading it, you kinda ask yourself, why am I not exercising again? His writing is so clear and concise, understandable to anyone, and without shaming or guilting, provides all the reasons why moving the body in so many ways is so beneficial. He is not fanatical, or a “health nut”, just a professor with lots of research on the subject and an avuncular empathy on why it can be so hard to begin or continue. In the end, the likely reader reaction might be, yeah it’s hard, but will pay off in dividends for the effort. If that’s the case for you, congratulations. And like for me, if you need any kind of encouragement to keep it up, just open the book to any chapter and start reading again and you will be happy to put the book down and go outside to resume your walking or running or head to the gym. Apart from that, the activity and the benefit is reward enough to keep it going.
