Matt Fitzgerald is a prolific author of training-for-endurance events books. What makes his books so exceptional is how he combines actual racing and coaching experience with knowledge of physiology. His books are grounded in all 3. In his latest book, his theme is that pacing is everything in racing. The perfect race? When you could not have completed it any faster. How do you achieve this? Steady work rate from start to finish.He also explores what are your actual limits; he breaks from other models by stating that âperceptions donât indicate our limits; they are our limits.â With this in mind, how do we train to extend our perception limits? One recommendation (among many) is ban cognitive off loading (Garmin watches are the main culprit). Learn to self-regulate. The goal of racing is to find your limits. Naturally, Matt proposes how to train to do this. He details a system devised to extend your capacity to extend your perceived effort. He uses the work of Gunnar Borg who pioneered in the 1980âs a scale to track the rate of perceived exertion. This scale he incorporates into a training system that exchanges standard physiological states (lactate threshold, critical velocity, steady state pace etc.) for a scale of perceived exertion (highest intensity sustainable for 20-30 minutes, 60 minutes, etc).
