Change your attitude about food that is âbadâ for you for good!
I just finished Diet and Fitness Explained by William Porter. At 53 I thought I knew everything about diet, but was wrong and did learn some very helpful information which Iâve been putting to practice this week and hope to continue on forever! If you are ready to concentrate on eating healthy and overall fitness, I highly recommend this book and the Audible version which accompanies it. Unlike alcohol, which the author wrote an explanation of in the book Alcohol Explained, at least one can âcheatâ every once in a while and still maintain overall health. I love it that William doesnât pretend to be perfect and to never have a slice of pizza at a kids party when there is nothing else to eat. The advice on diet and exercise was very sound and easy to understand. Iâm staring at a REALLY nice filet cooked perfectly by my sweet husband (he had no idea I was trying to avoid red meat lol) and after a couple of bites I really dont want any more of it. I believe my attitudes about food that is bad for me has changed just as my beliefs about alcohol changed with AE.

Best comprehensive book I’ve found
I read Porter’s other book, Alcohol Explained, and both enjoyed it and gleaned a lot of great info, so I decided to try this one. I have to admit it was somewhat preaching to the choir, because I had already put some of this together based on my own reading and research, but everything in here closely aligns with both diet and fitness recommendations from the medical community and my own anecdotal experience.Knowledge is empowering. Instead of reading puff pieces in magazines and in blogs about açai berries, paleo, or whatever the newest fad is, read about how our bodies work. Read about what foods actually nourish us without slick marketing crowding out the facts. And shifting or thinking about food the way this book presents it makes it much easier to make lasting lifestyle changes that lead to healthy weight and body than simply being told “eat less.”I’d recommend buying a few cookbooks with healthy recipes along with this one, so you can learn to cook and prepare tasty and healthy meals. This way it will be easier for the junk to not tempt you. As for me, I’m happily expanding my food preparation skills and watching the scale go down, especially since I no longer drink, also thanks to Potter!

informative
This book has inspired me to be conscientious of my mind and eating habits. Also read Alcohol explained and it is educational. Convinced me to head back down a healthy road and get back out exercising and running ASAP. Was able to cut out the bad habits.

Impactful and Practical
Really loved this book and the authorâs straightforward writing style. The content in the book is not necessarily new to most people, but the way the author arranges the information and encourages you to think differently about food and exercise is impactful. I read his book on Alcohol and gave it up without any issues because I followed his approach on mindset.

Plain and simple, it is worth the read.
I read Alcohol Explained and it changed my life and how I look at alcohol. It was that simple for me. Donât get me wrong, at first itâs definitely work, but over time, wow. I started eating more cookies after I quit alcohol and really felt unhealthy (even after taking the alcohol out!) so I tried Noom (which is very practical and a great app) and decided I wanted a quick, common sense kind of approach to diet and fitness. Welp, I turned to William Porterâs âDiet and Fitness Explainedâ and Iâm ready (mentally) to go for it.Each time I crave something, Iâll really think about it. He also talks about the digestive system and for me that was huge. I never knew these things and that tangible knowledge is power for me.Highly recommend!

Practical, just ok.
Concepts are common sense, outlined as such in the book. Very straight forward and to the point; forgiving approach, just try to make mindful choices of what to eat and when youâre eating it. Thought there could be a bit more around the subconscious linked to decisions driving foundational changes in habit(s).

Porter explores the Why & How making better choices will improve every aspect of (healthier) living; he breaks down each element in concise & easy to understand segments. Whether you’re already a fit person looking for new insights or looking where to start in making better choices, it’s a fabulous resource.

I’ve so far read this book twice and will certainly be reading it again. There is a lot to take in even though it is written in a very clear informative way. I’ve never really thought about the foods my body actually needs before, which is quite enlightening. Everything else you read seems to be aimed at eating certain things because you can’t have what you really want. Now I’ve read this book I’m looking at fruit and vegetables so differently and they are now where my meals start rather than adding those for a bit of something ‘healthy’. Interesting and quite scary to understand how your body processes sugars and I have managed to cut my intake quite dramatically. Understanding the ‘why’ and realising how your brain responds to certain situations means I no longer want to overeat or even eat certain foods as I know they will have such a negative impact on my body and sleep and overall quality of life. I wish there had been more about benefits or otherwise of eating meat and dairy and the effect these have on your body but reading the book has made me ask so many questions about my present lifestyle I am doing lots of additional research to make my own fully informed choices, which is what the book encourages. Pleased to know my running is such a healthy choice as so many people tell me its bad for me (all non-runners!)!! It really is a life changing book!!

William Porter brings us the scientific information to truly understand the effects of what we put into our bodies. He is non-judgemental but gives us the tools to make our own, informed, choices. It has helped me to see WHY some foods are deemed healthy, not so good or downright unhealthy.
