How I sized my ball and why I LOVE it
I’m in love! I can’t believe I didn’t get one of these 10 years ago!!! First, I watched some of the ball exercise videos on YouTube, just to get a feel for what you could do with the ball as I got into better shape. In one video, the woman showed warmups sitting on the ball, and her thighs were at a 90 degree angle to the ground. I took out my tape measure and measured how long 65cm, 55cm, 75cm were compared to my pants inseam to get an idea of how big the ball is inflated. Keeping in mind that the ball will not be fully inflated (60cm), and will squish down when sat on or used, I figured that the 65cm ball would be the ideal for my 5’6″ frame with a 75cm inseam. PERFECT size! When sitting on it fully inflated, my legs are at a perfect right angle to the ground.
I am using it instead of my desk chair. The first day was awful. Like most people, I slouch in my chair, and despite periodically reminding myself about posture, if I’m busy doing something, I end up slouched like a bag til I jerk myself up and remind myself of my posture again. Sitting on the ball makes this reminder easy. I am NOT in great physical shape, so balancing on a ball all day long at my desk was painful and hard to do. My muscles ached, and I couldn’t find my bed fast enough.
But the 2nd day, it was easier, and now, the 3rd day, I’m almost used to it. Just like that, I can see and feel my core tightening and there were several surprising side effects. I got up from my desk a lot to move around. Sitting isn’t ‘easy’, so standing and walking was just as viable an alternative. This forced me to move nonstop all day, yet never stressed me out. It is proving to be a gentle building of my very out of shape endurance. Other side affect was the effect on my vision. I was used to looking at my monitors all day from exactly the same height. So when I stood up, I sometimes would get dizzy from the change and adjustment. Well sitting on the ball, I sometimes bounce and ‘march’, which makes my vision jar up and down. This was a weird effect the first day, and made me a little dizzy, but now, 3 days later, my actual balance has improved overall too. Did I mention I LOVE this ball?
I let my son, who’s way more physically fit than I am, try it, and he gave up after 10 minutes, so maybe it’s not for everyone. He said watching videos while bouncing around a bit messed with his eyes. That’s exactly the effect I had, which is why I kept doing it. My brain adjusted and that’s exactly why my balance improved. My first day was TORTURE, but I was determined to get more exercise while sitting at my desk turning into a vegetable.
I figure if I use this as a desk chair for a couple of weeks, I will build up enough core and strengthen my muscles enough to try the video exercises. Not there yet, but I can see it happening. The ball itself seems very durable, but if I had to buy a new one every week, I’d consider it well worth doing, because it’s a whole lot cheaper than a gym. But it looks like it’s going to be fine for a long time. It was hard to pump up the first time (pump included in box), and really hard to get the pin back out when you want to top it off the 2nd time (but they included 3 cap pins in the box).
I bought this ball, having never seen one in person before. I think everyone should get one, these things might single handedly cure overweight America if everyone were forced to use them as chairs!!
Helpful my comment so I know people actually read it please!

My best purchase of 2014! Leave the old, uncomfortable chairs behind.
It sort of surprises me that humans haven’t adopted these for all chairs yet. Not only is it comfortable, but it really encourages movement and fires new patterns for activity because it’s almost impossible to sit on it in the same mundane and uncomfortable ways that we generally do with chairs. Even when I’m not devoting time exclusively toward exercise, I’m moving around with it all the time. What I enjoy most about the balance ball is that it blurs the lines between exercise and sitting and is therefore more motivating and encouraging to move.
When I start feeling the usual aches I’ve become used to, I notice that I start moving around to correct it with this instead of sitting on my feet or propping my legs up like I used to. Sometimes I’ll just lay completely horizontal on it for a little while until my back feels better, and it’s great. In addition, when I am exercising, I’ve been able to naturally and intuitively target portions of my abs that before felt a lot more cumbersome because of the hard floor factor.
The reason I like the Gaiam one in particular is because it’s a lot sturdier than some that I’ve used. The material is really thick, and the pump works quite well despite the feeling I got when I first started pumping. There are 3 little white stakes included to seal the air pocket.
You’ll get a heavy chemical-laden smell out of the box that will go away in a few days. That’s with any of these. To expedite it, it’s important to soak it with soap and hand wash it before you inflate it. These things are made in plastic factories, not in daisy fields. I’ve sent things back before (like weights) that were unbearably harmful and smelly, but this is reasonable and worth the quality trade-off.
Overall, I think this ball is going to last, and like I said, it’s great for exercise, posture, movement, and sitting. I don’t miss the so-called “back support” of a chair now that I’ve been using this. It never existed!

The perfect desk chair–but buy 75cm if you are using it for that!
This is my new desk chair and I love it. Use it all the time.
If you are using this as your desk chair: BUY THE BIG 75CM ONE! I read about the sizing, and since I am just over 5′ tall, I bought a smaller ball. I think it would have been a good size to use while working out, but it was way too short for my desk. So buy a 75cm one if you are using it as a desk chair.
Due to my job, I’m on the computer all the time and I was having a lot of back and neck pain. Using this ball as a chair has helped me eliminate most of that pain. It keeps me more aware of my seated posture, and I since it moves around I am not straining the same little muscles for hours straight. I highly suggest it if you have a desk job and have back pain.
The ball is made from high quality plastic or rubber (whatever it is). It is very well made.
When I first got it, I did have to re-inflate it a few times, probably because it was being stretched out for the first time. Now it rarely needs any reinflating, and if it does it’s just a few pumps.
The hand-pump included works just fine too. It’s sturdy and made with hard plastic.
I haven’t tried the workout CD it came with, since I mostly just use it for sitting on, so that did not factor into my review.

I use this ball to supplement Pilates classes and I’m very pleased with it. It also makes a convenient emergency seat.

I ordered these to give to my friends as a thank you gift after my birthday dinner. Both complain of back pain so I thought this would be the perfect gift for them to do stretches and keep their core working, even just by sitting and balancing on the ball it takes some work. Now one of them, uses hers as a desk chair.

Diameter von 75cm lieà sich nicht erreichen, auch wenn der Anleitung des Herstellers genau gefolgt wurde (über 2Tage aufpumpen, lange warten). Zeitverschwendung!
