    It Wasn’t What I Expected
I’ve never written a book review before but I felt compelled to with this one. This book wasn’t what I expected. I’ve consumed so many self help books; and while they’re wonderful, there is always something I feel they can’t touch in what help I’m looking for. Then I read this.
This book feels like talking to an old friend. So warm, relatable and I’ve honestly never felt more seen in my life. This book has taken me over a year to get through because I will read the same section 50 times over, digesting it over weeks. It has been a primary source of comfort for me in my intense grief of having newly estranged family. This book has made me laugh, cry, triggered me (in good ways – ya girls gotta heal), and inspired me more than any other book I’ve read.
I just want to say thank you. Thank you Dr. Sherrie. You have changed my life!

    Amazing eye opening book!
This book was such an eye-opener for me to understand the various dynamics of the family. I’ve always wondered why my mom was so critical of me when she was supposed to love me unconditionally. Dr. Campbell is an amazing writer, an incredibly compassionate therapist and she explains those dynamics beautifully. She has so many tools in her back pocket to help you grow, emotionally and intellectually. I have several of her books, and I do also listen to her podcast. She has so much empathy for her readers and her patients, and her innate ability to validate your feelings, while keeping you accountable for your own actions, is the best therapist work I’ve ever seen. You can immediately feel the connection she has with all she write, from a personal standpoint, and how her entire work makes you feel, understood, cared for, and protected. So many golden nuggets in this book, I am convinced it will be an eye-opener for you as well. Read it! 💕💕💕💕💕

Fantastic book! It was like reading about my life word for word. I’m not crazy. It really happened. I cannot say enough things about this book, but to read it. Anyone in this situation will benefit from reading it. I wish that I had found it sooner. Highly highly recommend!

Wonderful, helpful book for those in an unimaginably painful experience
I found this book to be well written, organized, and very supportive for people going through (in my opinion) one of the hardest experiences possible—the estrangement from family members who they thought would be in their life forever.
As both a licensed psychotherapist and a survivor of toxic family myself, I can speak to the importance and validity of this work on many levels. I am grateful to have found this book, and will certainly recommend it with my highest regard to those in the midst of deep family dysfunction and relational toxicity.

A Life-Changing Approach to Healing from Emotional Trauma
Dr. Sherrie Campbell offers an incredible approach to dealing with toxic family, consistently emphasizing the key of nonengagement. The idea of cutting ties has been something I’ve struggled with for so long, but Dr. Sherrie has helped me begin to carve my own path to healing by beginning to establish (intermittent) no-contact boundaries. She has helped me confront my issues in a healthier way and given me power in my interactions with my toxic family members. In fact, my last engagement with my mother was the strongest and healthiest I have ever felt around her. Typically being around her literally twists my stomach up in knots, but I finally went in with a ‘you can’t hurt me anymore’ mentality, and it felt incredible. Not only do Dr. Sherrie’s stories help you to feel validated in your own experiences, especially where family members make you feel like the crazy one, but they offer courage and guidance in the process and aftermath of cutting ties. This is something most authors are too afraid to do because they don’t want to deal with the pushback of toxic family members, which unfortunately take up a large part of our population. Because it’s a taboo subject, many people don’t even realize or choose to accept this hard truth. Dr. Sherrie, however, is a fearless QUEEN, lighting up the path for an ever-growing community of individuals who have been traumatized by their family members #NotAlone. Working through the exercises in this book helped me to deal with the toxic behavior of my mother in addition to uncovering emotional scars from my father that I didn’t even know I had.

This book is extremely helpful for anyone who has had to distance themselves from a toxic family member. Not only does it help reaffirm the decision and make you feel less alone, but it also gives advice for handling potential future situations.

Where do I even start. This book was the only thing that genuinly understood what I was going through. Every page I would turn would verbatim speak to me exactly what I needed to hear. This author knew exactly what she was talking about and is really just a hero in disguse. I wish her nothing but the best because as lonely as I am, I have never felt it because this book has always been there for me in ways that humans will never understand.
