    Fitness Invaluable
For me, there is something fascinating about ultra-endurance athletes. The desire to push body and mind to beyond it’s perceived limits is inspiring, especially in modern times where convenience is king. I started my own journey to ultra-marathons in June 2012 and sought out as much information as I could find to help me train physically and mentally. One of the first podcasts I listened to was by Rich Roll, and in one of the early episodes his guest was a personal trainer and ultra-distance cyclist called Vinnie Tortorich. I’d never heard of the guy before, but in the 9 or so months I’ve had Vinnie in my life he’s had a big effect on my health and fitness, and given me plenty of laughs. If you listen to the podcast then you’ll know Vinnie’s style, and you’ll probably have his voice in your head as you read. If you don’t know Vinnie then he is someone who doesn’t mess around when it comes to health and fitness. There is none of this `Biggest Loser starve-yourself-no-pain-no-gain’ bootcamp style fad nonsense, but a realistic and successful approach that becomes a lifestyle. To say Vinnie has a contagious passion for helping people lose weight and get fit would be a biblical understatement, even when food companies, pharmaceutical companies, and even governments muddy the waters on how to eat healthily.`Fitness Confidential’ is a great extension of the podcast – funny, fast, educational, and passionate. It gives an easily digestible insight into maintaining a healthy lifestyle that will allow you to keep weight off for life and stay fit. Vinnie’s knowledge of the fitness world is based on decades of experience, so the book dissects a lot of the myths and lies about the industry, and in true Vinnie style he doesn’t hold back with his opinions or colourful language! It is a fantastic combination of diet advice and fitness training coupled with great anecdotes from Vinnie’s career. He has given me invaluable training advice and support in my quest to complete my first ultra-marathon, so I have experienced first-hand just how good Vinnie is. And when you read this book you’ll see he doesn’t just talk the talk, he walks the walk… and in truly inspiring fashion. The chapter covering his quest to complete the Furnace Creek 508 bicycle race having just been given the all clear from leukaemia is mind-blowing.I had intended to hold off reading `Fitness Confidential’ until a forthcoming long-haul flight, but started the first chapter and ploughed through the whole book in next to no time (I now need to find a new book for the flight – thanks Vinnie!). Vinnie’s personal stories are the highlights of the book for me as I found them sad, funny, and hugely inspiring, as well as giving lot of insight into what has been a pretty incredible life to date.As he says near the start of the book `I’m your personal trainer’ now, and once you’ve read this book you aren’t going to argue. This is a great book from one of the best and most inspiring in the business, and I can’t recommend it highly enough.

Ironman..but more importantly a human reviewing this book.
Honestly it’s very hard to review this book…from a health standpoint it’s 5 stars..from a read standpoint it’s 5 stars..well..rest assured this will be a 5 star book for you if you like the idea of getting max health, not being mislead via quick fixes etc, and entertainment value from one single book.I’ve been a fan of his podcast for some time, though I am a plant based person (really wanted to type athlete but truth be told I’m a working adult/father/husband who just also tries to squeeze in Ironman distance races) and I learned of Vinnie’s wisdom via another podcast that was focused on plant based eating and athletics. What I came to find out however is that Vinnie is a source of amazing information, motivation, and delivered in a “fun” way. Be warned however, if you’re looking here for a quick fix this is not the book for you..or maybe it is..to snap you out of that falsehood. The podcast really hammers that home but I feel it’s important to point out to the folks who may not “know” Vinnie that way.I’ll just say this: if you want a book that will actually HELP you in your health goals (read weight loss, sense of wellness, or sense of health education) this is a great book for you.Lastly I mentioned Ironman above, I just completed my first IM distance race so I am no means anywhere close to a elite athlete, the only reason I point it out is because I dropped 45lbs via Vinnie’s guidance and was ABLE to complete the race because of that. In addition you dont have to have a race planned to benefit from this book. The focus is truly on enhancing your life and sense of wellness..which is the most important focus and that never leaves the tone of the book.To summarize I’ll say that this book is fantastic. If you’re sick of a thousand experts trying to tell you what is best for you this book puts you right back in the drivers seat. Pick it up, it’s cheap, it’s effective, and it will change your life if you let it.

This is a good read. Not only is it full of health and fitness tidbits of great value; there’s heart and a genuinely motivational man sharing personal stories. I would recommend this for anyone who is wavering on their own determination and goals. If you are interested in fitness and athletics. If you enjoy hearing personal life stories, if you have a sense of humour and a heart. Your gonna love this. Reading this book and learning about Vinnie’s NSNG; is one of the better things I have done for myself in a long time! Thanks Vinnie! Thanks Dean!

Very nice book about fitness industry, career of the author and his life journey. Do not expect tips how to get your summer /instagram body by doing nothing and just following his ‘new, amazing and one and only discovery’. The author will rather explain you why all TV Shop magic devices are just a scam, why diets are not effective, why following blindly all fitness magazines is stupid and how the fitness club chains are working (playing on you). All that based on his own experience as he’s now 57 and has years of experience. Yes, nothing really new, we all know it but you read it again in a very short, compact and often funny form. Yes, there is one serious and direct tip from the author: stay active and follow NGNS – no grain no sugar concept. However reading this book will also affect the way you look at the entire fitness business- you will start seeing it from the different perspective, with more distance and confidence. And whether you are a client of the trainer or a trainer itself, you will be surprised how this small book can affect your way of thinking.

This was such an easy read. The honesty in the storytelling made you feel as though you were right there beside Vinnie as he battled through some extraordinary challenges. The life advice is terrific too and not difficult to apply. Great book. Thanks Vinnie.
