I wish Mike was my Doctor.
Bottom Line Up Front: I wish Mike Simpson was my personal physician. I’m a retired Special Forces Officer and Ironman Triathlete and well past the 40 year mark. Like Mike I grew up in the Army in the era of doing hard, sometimes dumb, things to become fit for my operational responsibilities. There is a better way. When I discuss performance with my personal general practitioner I get blank stares and the only advice I get is to keep doing what you’re doing. I am now a college professor who researches human performance and I am very impressed by Mike’s book. He has consolidated a broad spectrum of information that will help anyone develop and sustain a life long high level of physical and cognitive performance. Each chapter addresses a critical element of performance and longevity. Literally doctoral dissertations are written about various aspects of each chapter and Mike has distilled those bodies of research into an understandable form for those with minimal scientific background. His practical experiences have also enabled him to not only describe the current state of knowledge but to provide practical tips on how to utilize that knowledge. Reading Mike’s book and applying his recommendations will help you improve your performance, increase the quality of your life, and increase the number of years you’ll enjoy that life.

Thanks Mike!
Thanks to Mike’s book I can no longer use age as an excuse, thanks to Mike’s book I no longer need to! Dr. Mike Simpson’s book is very well organized, easy to read and apply to your life. This is not only a book about fitness, it is about a quality of life. Mike does not tell you what to do, he explains concepts and talks about what works for him, fully acknowledging that you may have different goals and different needs – the concepts still apply but the application may be different. Thanks to Dr. Simpson I have a greater understanding of the aging process. Mike’s book has challenged me in a number of ways. Mike’s book has encouraged me to see myself as a true warrior athlete and not to accept anything less. While this book focuses on men over the age of 40, this book is beneficial for men of any age. I have handed out several copies to others and getting ready to order a few more for others. It is a great resource and a great gift. Thanks Mike!

Very good, well written book.
First a thank you to Dr. Mike Simpson for your service to this great nation. Also, thank you for the work in writing this book. Overall this is a well written book in which Dr. Simpson lays out very important information that the middle aged man needs to hear to improve and support his mental and physical health. I took issue with a few things Dr. Simpson talks about, he still buys in to the big pharma agenda and myths of cholesterol being bad and he degrades red meat. But, those issues aside this is a well written book with a wealth of helpful information.I highly recommend this book and purchased a copy for my physician. Dr. Simpson has a philosophy that I agree with that we should have a unified command of our health care along with our physicians.Dr. Simpson if you read this review please contact your fellow Army Doctor, Dr. Shawn Baker, M.D. and learn from his extensive knowledge regarding red meat and the cholesterol myth.

Needed This As I’m Becoming an Official Greybeard!
I’m writing this review on January 31st 2022. In exactly 3 weeks (Feb 21st) I turn 50. I like to think I’m above average for coming into the ‘greybeard’ part of my life, I’m very active bigger guy (6’1 260) and full of zest. But there are mornings when things just don’t feel right. And Doc Simpson’s book addressed those feelings to a ‘T’ in this book. I’ve implemented 5 things from the book in the past 3 weeks and it’s 100% Leveled UP my energy, stamina and lets just say my lady is A LOT more happy! :)Doc’s protocol for maintaining the standard and setting higher goals is above reproach. Doc is no frills and basically says get to work, but smartly. On a selfish note, I know Doc does read his reviews (heard it on his podcast) and I would LOVE to get Doc on my award winning podcast Time To Shine Today. The Knowledge Nuggets he would drop on my squad of listeners would be priceless. Hint hintL. Scott FergusonUS Navy VeteranHost of the Time To Shine Today Podcast

Good info
When it comes to this particular field it is hard imagine an author with better credentials or qualifications to write this book. His info is solid and advice beyond doubt, but…I can’t help wondering what is the target audience? Now, I absolutely expect that good result require a high level of commitment, even sacrifice at times, but the sheer amount of work and time needed to do it raises the issue of feasibility if you are a person with full-time job, pre-teen kids, family obligations etc. Another considerable factor is the financial investment required to follow all steps in terms of fitness training, nutrition, medical supplements and so on. There is, certainly, a group of people who could put the instruction outlined here to good use, but I’m afraid the majority will face too many obstacles. That said, even if you cannot follow the recommendations to the letter, there is still a good amount of useful knowledge to gain and possibly implement in your striving to get the best possible results for your circumstances.

HONED is a great read for men of all ages. While the information isn’t new, it is presented in a clear and easy way by a man with real world experiences. If you have been off your mark and need to get back on track, this book is a great motivator written by a true Warrior – Dr. Mike Simpson. As a L.E.O. I have absolute trust in “Doc” based upon my experience with Sheepdog Response, Woobies, and have applied many of his life lessons. I strongly recommend this book.Rod, Canada

No fancy diets or revolutionary “secret” commando workouts here, just the facts, backed up by solid science. Doc Simpson lays it out in KISS (Keep It Simple, Stupid) fashion : you’re not 25 anymore, so you need to readjust. But that doesn’t mean the scrapheap, far from it. If you’re forty plus and already a high-speed go-getter, a former go-getter who let yourself go, or a never-really-went-and-got-it but now you want to start getting after it, there’s something here for you. BLUF (Bottom Line Up Front) : it’s never too late. Do yourself a favour and pick up a copy – you won’t regret it.

When I heard about Mike’s book it sounded like it had the information that I was looking for. I am definitely in the target demographic, so I ordered it. Generally, I am drawn to this kind of information presented by people like Mike who have gained their knowledge and experience by living it, and in circumstances where their lives often depended upon their training and preparation. To me, there is something more raw and real about that when you compare it to the myriad of books by fitness gurus and “influencers”. Mike’s book had just what I needed. It is packed with relevant information based on Mike’s experience and knowledge gained from his career as a special forces operator and emergency doctor. This is not just theory, Mike presents practical information that you can use. Thanks Mike!

Great book. As a man in my 40s, I found this book extremely useful. It provided practical advice on lifestyle, including nutrition and training, but even more importantly it discussed the value of healthy and productive choices. Life doesn’t have to be over by a certain age, this is a good guide on how to keep your life on track and why you need to stop leaning on age as the ultimate excuse for poor choices.
