Requires Some Self-Control
I ordered this Educational Insights Hot Dots Pete The Cat Kindergarten Reading & Math Workbook for my grandson.I actually ordered two different Pete the Cat sets at the same time. One that is designed for Pre-K that has simpler questions and this one. I let my grandson play with the easier version first so that he could get the idea of how it works without facing challenging material. It was always my intention, though, for him to spend most of his time with this version. The concept is not a new one. I remember playing with a similar toy when I was little, except that the stylus for the one I had was connected with a wire and only lit up for correct answers. For my grandson, that system of no lights no sound for incorrect answers would probably be better. You see, he really loves the sounds that the stylus makes when it detects an incorrect answer. And, actually, pressing the stylus down on any surface that it not the black correct answer dot will produce a “wrong answer” sound. The floor, the walls, the dog, his shoe, his hand… all of these quickly became targets for the stylus so he could get the sound he loved. For kiddos with a tad more self-control, this is a fun and engaging activity. There are lots of pages, and there are no glaring errors that are sometimes found in similar items manufactured in countries where the main language is something other than English. It is possible to turn the sound off on the stylus, but any kid will quickly learn how to turn it back on again. Thankfully, the volume is not screaming loud like so many children’s items seem to be these days. And, to his credit, I did hear my grandson playing with this item on his own and, from the sounds I could hear, actually trying to get the correct answers.

Pete the Cat AND Kindergarten concepts in an interactive book? Sign us up!
Got this for one of my preschool students that is obsessed (!!!) with Pete the Cat. Just to let you know how in love with Pete the Cat he is, he walks around with Pete the Cat all day long, giving it hugs, and creates houses for him. He eats, sleeps, plays with Pete the Cat all day long. So when I saw this, I knew this book set, I knew this is what would help bring him to small groups (he was always resisting LOL!), but I was right. As soon as he saw this, he wanted to come to group, and participated, just so he could try this. He loves this book! He has been talking more as he has been using the book, since he recognizes some of the Pete the Cat pictures from books we have read in class. This is recommended for ages five ang up, (due to the skills it covers) but since he is three, I sit with him and walk through the different concepts so he is engaged, and it helps me gauge what he understands, based on the responses I see him making. Then I know what to reteach, because many of the skills in the book are things we have focused on throughout our school year already. : ) I love how this has brought him to doing what I want, which is focusing on these practical concepts, and he likes it well, because it is Peter the Cat!So what you get is a Hot Dots pen (you need to install 2 AAA batteries, which arenât included, and you will need a screwdriver to unlock the battery compartment, for safety reasons) and a really nice-sized spiral bound Pete the Cat Hot Dots Kindergarten Skills book, with sturdy âlaminatedâ cardstock thickness pages. The Pete the Cat pages have authentic illustrations and characters from all the Pete the Cat Books you know and love too!The concepts you focus on are Letter Matching, Beginning Letters, Ending Letters, Middle Short and Long Vowels, Rhyming, Find the Word/Picture Games, Reading Sentences then Matching Pictures, Unscrambling Sight Words, Punctuation, Counting to 10, 20, Number Words, Number Order to 100, Skip Counting by 5âs, 10âs, Addition, Subtraction, 2D and 3D shapes, Word Problems, Comparing Numbers, and Graphing, and they are super easy for little ones to practice and learn these concepts.Plus if you arenât ever sure how to install the batteries or use the pen, the directions are printed directly on the last page of the book, so no instructions to ever lose! The pen has several ways to give feedback about answers to your child, so perfect for even those with special needs, (such as those that are hard of hearing) because there is a light that will show them how they answered (red for incorrect, green for correct). Honestly as a teacher that works with children of all abilities, this is a really nice bonus, because ALL children can enjoy the fun of this activity, because it is not just dependent son sound to learn. However there is a way to mute or increase the sound as you press the pen, on the body of the pen. Easy! The pen is also easy for little ones to hold, especially those who have fine motor challenges, and has a âgrippyâ area to promote proper hand placement for children who are learning how to do a 3 point grip when writing. This is a great learning tool for little ones who LOVE Pete the Cat, to practice necessary Kindergarten Skills in a fun, interactive format. They get âin the momentâ feedback in a way that promotes independent learning. The pen is perfectly designed for little ones who are learning pre-writing skills, such as holding the appropriate grasp for writing, and just is a fun way to tie in literacy (favorite character from books) to other activities. Definitely a fan of this, not only because of my little one loves it so much, but for all it teaches. If this sounds like what you are looking for, I promise you will love it as much as we do!
