This is my 5th book by Maria Emmerich, so you can see already that I’m a big fan. I began my keto journey April 2017 when the doctor told me that my age, lifestyle, and family disposition had all caught up to me being prediabetic. She talked about changing my diet, exercising, and the possibility of being on medication for the rest of my life. I made up my mind then and there to not be like my mother and grandmother, who lived their lives around a testing meter and insulin shots. The first book I stumbled across for the ketogenic way of life was Maria’s 30-Day Cleanse, and my life has never been the same. In October 2017, I returned to the same doctor and she was shocked by the changes. I had lost 40 lbs. (a wonderful benefit of a keto diet) and my A1C levels had dropped from 6.8 (borderline diabetic) to 5.2 (middle of the normal range). Even my cholesterol levels had changed enough that she was no longer concerned. And the most rewarding benefit of eating the keto way is that my weight is STILL off (no yo-yo dieting) because I enjoy the foods, do not feel like I’m hungry all the time, and I have more energy than I have had in the last 2 decades. My friends ask what is keto? So that’s what I love about this book! It goes into a full explanation of the science behind this way of life. I highly recommend this to anyone who wants to learn about how to get healthy, lose weight, and to maintain all the advantages you gain by following this lifestyle. This book goes into detail about how to do it all AND it’s broken down into short, readable sections in simple terms so that you can set it down if you need to. With chapters like Hormones (chapter 5), Modifications for Disease (chapter 6), and A Checklist for Accelerated Healing (chapter 12), this book addresses health problems that many people are trying to get help with using alternative/holistic changes so that they don’t have to depend on medication with all the bad side effects. My personal two favorite chapters are chapter 7 (Common Mistakes) and chapter 10 (Exercise and Keto Athletes). These chapters are helping me fine-tune how I eat, and, now that I feel well enough to exercise, how to exercise effectively with a keto lifestyle. There’s even a no-cook 7-day meal plan (with grocery list!) for those days I’m too busy to cook. The one disappointment I had was that there are no recipes in this book (that I’ve seen yet). BUT that’s where you can begin your collection of Maria’s cookbooks. I have the 30-Day Cleanse, Comfort Foods, Restaurant Favorites, and Quick and Easy Ketogenic Cooking, so to be frank, I’m set for life. (Although, I have her newest Dairy-Free cookbook already on the way and I’m so excited about it.) Despite the lack of recipes, this is now my go-to book for anything concerning keto. Thank you, Maria and Craig, for putting it all down in one book. I love it!

I wanted to first take the time out to write a review for this Keto book! My cholesterol tested high in March and then ridiculously higher in April. To the point my doctor was talking statins, which I had no desire to use. He wanted me to see the staff dietician but she had no appts for a month out. I had to do something before then. I didnât want to be that mom where I had a heart attack and everyone was left saying âShe was always making healthy choicesâ. Mind you, I have been no sugar and gluten free for years. I ate very close to Paleo with dairy. I tried keto in February (based off of limited knowledge and recipes on Pinterest-bad choice on my part) to try to get off the extra 20 pounds I was carrying but I didnât lose a pound. I went back to Paleo in March. These cholesterol numbers scared me because my LDL skyrocketed even more when I retested in April. Never in my life had my LDL been that high. I dove into reading cardiologist articles, and reading all I could about cholesterol. I came across the Emmerichâs on my Instagram account because someone I follow tagged them in something. I decided that I would buy the Keto book because maybe I had been doing something wrong with my previous keto try. I jumped in on faith despite being scared it could raise my cholesterol even more. I added in the knowledge I gleaned from reading the Keto book, without dairy and nightshades. I had my cholesterol retested again a month later against my doctors advice because he said even though I had lost considerable amount of weight in a months time, my cholesterol numbers probably wouldnât have budged yet and he didnât want me to be further discouraged. However, he finally agreed to test and my cholesterol numbers dropped a little over 60 points. In one month! My doctor was impressed and told me to keep up the good work. I was very emotional because I felt so stuck before. I know the cholesterol numbers are only a tool and do not give the whole picture but they dropped down so much in just a months time AND while doing keto. I am so grateful for this KETO book. I feel amazing overall, my cholesterol and weight are in check but my energy and mental clarity have been such a bonus. I appreciate the simple science that is laid down in this book. It gives an understanding to what is going on in the body. It is an easy to read, easy to follow, beautiful book.

Sorry, this is my must honest opinion!After reading year over year Maria’s advice and instructing you of how to “eat fat” and how important it was to eat enough fat and protein for you, now I’ve found much of the information contradictory and at the end the final message is “starve yourself”, dont do anything pleasurable in your life. With a little of 400 calories per day with ketones and loose weight (…I’ll loose weigh and fat in any diet doing this) or do massive amount of exorcise and eat what you want!! This is the clear example of a non-medical editor learning in the process and in the meantime writing +6 confusing books in the process; so making some profit out of the confusion of your readers for years.
