    Thoughtful. A well-written page turner!
I’m teaching a class this semester on the importance of outdoor recreation and outdoor recreation management to local high school students. I bought this book in hopes that it might provide me with additional information on the importance of the outdoor recreation industry and I was not disappointed. Not only did it provide me with great information, but the personal stories really made this a great read. Highly recommended!

    Absolute MUST READ
“You know MY story, right? I should be in Tibet, not India! So, Luis, you have a choice. Sometimes you don’t choose the path; sometimes the path chooses you. It’s up to you how you want to show up, what you want to do.” – Dalai LamaI have long admired Luis Guillermo Benitez for his passionate and incredibly impactful work in the outdoor recreation industry. We share a number of life and career impact points with Outward Bound USA, University of Denver – Daniels College of Business, Vail Resorts, the connection to the Vail Valley and Eagle, Colorado, and people from Denver we consider mentors and friends.I cannot endorse, recommend, and urge everyone to read his book, “Higher Ground” with Frederick Reimers enough (https://lnkd.in/eK7QC8Yj)!I have earmarked so many pages, that I might as well have highlighted the entire book, but here are a few things that will stick with me:🤔 Chapter 3 was eye-opening and made so much sense from “One thing that has been lost in the outdoors during the culture wars of the last decade has been the understanding of the link between hunting and angling and conservation” to the licenses and taxes imposed on that sector of outdoor recreation to fund the upkeep and sustainability of land and water usage to “it’s important to recognize that the rest of the outdoor community (mountain biking, camping, hiking, climbing, etc.)hasn’t equally shared in the burden of caring for our wildlands and wildlife.”📚 “There are now over a dozen academic programs around the country focusing on the ORec industry…it’s hard not to revel in the irony that a guy who slacked his way through high school and never got a bachelor’s degree became the biggest booster for academia to take his industry seriously.”⛰ “Outward Bound’s principles remained my moral backbone, and I believed then as I do now that we must each heed the call for periods of service to our society.”🚲 The image of John Hickenlooper wheeling around the state capitol building rotunda on an electric bike, and thinking that our late and beloved friend Steve Sander might have been there with the world’s biggest smile – RIP Steve – Love you, man!🎉 Laying the groundwork for the Outside Festival that recently took place with an amazing vision of Conor Hall and Robin Thurston.🏔 Most importantly, the references to Teddy Roosevelt’s legacy and the CCC, the need to reinstitute the Bureau of Outdoor Recreation which existed for 15 years beginning in 1962, and the need to bring everything Luis has done and advocates for to a higher level. Outdoor Recreation Roundtable Confluence of States Outdoor Alliance Trust for Public Land Outdoor Industry AssociationSo much for: “You are going to throw your future away to become a glorified camp counselor?”

Luis Benitez is a real inspiration and an amazing man. Not only are the messages inside the book insanely well put together, the writing itself is captivating and keeps the reader engaged. The importance of the Outdoor Recreation Industry in providing unity and solutions for our pressing environmental issues is illustrated throughout this story and anyone who reads this book will be motivated and excited about the industry. It is important to engage the younger generation and this book provides us a path forward. I highly recommend this read to everyone, if you are interested in the industry or not.

    A real cause for optimism
This should be required reading for anyone who lives, loves, or works outdoors. Start with the economic impact on our GDP, follow it through the health and well being benefits of being outdoors, and end with one of the few things our fragmented country can truly unite around. Benitez and Reimers have put together an entertaining, passionate, and informative “walk in the woods” that describes how states (and hopefully federal) governments have approached developing and outdoor economy in a very intentional way. There’s much to love – and be optimistic about – in this book.

Powerful book! I’m convinced! The outdoor industry can save us…
This book is such a gorgeous, emotional, fast read, and so important. The mountaineering stories are incredible and the political message is so strong and clear. I learned that the outdoor industry has a 1.1 Trillion dollar impact (on par with Pharma) but doesn’t yet have a cohesive lobby effort or representation in the Dept of Commerce!!! I am so here for this argument that clean air, clean water, and protection of public lands is THE THING that can bridge partisan divides; and make meaningful progress in protecting our health and economic security.

Outdoor Recreation as a growing and co-ordinated movement.
The strength of the “Higher Ground” book is learning about the successful work done by Luis Benitez and Frederick Reimers to reveal the growth of the Outdoor Recreation Industry over the past twenty years. Benitez has brought state government agencies, education organizations, and equipment retailers together to co-ordinate the success.

    Inspiring Read
Luis brings a personal and highly relevant perspective to our future in the American West (but with international implications) and the vital connection between our natural environment, a growing recreation economy, climate and conservation. It is must-reading for anyone who cares about a sustainable and equitable future.
