The finest thoughts on old age ever expressed?
I’ve had this book for many years, at first admiring its intellectual qualities. A moment ago, I finished it for the second time, enthralled at its penetrating wisdom and particular relevance as I approach 82. I can confirm from my own experiences in life, as a young man and now old, that he captures my suspicions. I can do and think now things I couldn’t do earlier when I was out to save the world. OK, an overstatement, as I really spent my life trying to amuse myself. Cicero put it all in perspective and I am much more comfortable for it. My advice: save this book for old age; young people will never appreciate or understand it.

Very stiff translation
I have both this translation and the one by Philip Freeman. The book is excellent and enjoyable, filled with good ideas. However, I much prefer the Freeman translation, which is much more accessible to contemporary readers. This translation is over 100 years old, and tends to preserve Latin word order and figures of speech, with no explanatory footnotes. Freemanâs translation is much more dynamic, capturing Ciceroâs ideas rather than Shuckburghâs more traditional word by word approach. Although I donât read Latin, I do read Greek and several other languages, so I am pretty familiar with translation styles. For an enjoyable read, go with Freeman! -Dr Austin McCaskill

It is not written by Cicero but by his friend, though it is published by Cicero himself.
