Western Centric
This is a good, starter manual, for learning bushcraft skills. The author was living and learning and teaching in the Utah, Colorado areas and the trees and wild edibles referenced are quite abundant in the Rocky or Sierra Nevada mountains and surrounding forests. Not so much East of the Mississippi, but it’s much better to teach what one knows, than to try to write a manual that covers all of North America, but has less detail. Readers should know that if you’re going to try these skills in The Great Smoky Mountains, The Monongahela National Forest, or up in Canada in Ontario, you may need additional sources and information.

Dirt Road Cowboy –
Great Outdoor Survival Book
I originally bought an edition of this book in the late 70’s. This updated version with color photos is an improvement and retains the original purpose of helping you to survive in the wild.Great for anyone wanting to learn primitive skills, survival and bushcrafting.

Essential For North American Bushcrafters
If you bush craft in North America, this book is an essential addition to your library. This book not only discusses the skills, but presents the material in a way that is conducive to practicality in the field. I would recommend this book to any outdoorsman or bush crafter.
TJACK SURVIVAL –
The book that started it all
This book set the standard for all the survival books that followed. This version has updated color pictures and insight that weâre added by the distributor. But it you wonât regret it.

An outstanding book and worthy update
Much has been written on the author, Larry Dean Olsen, and he has been declared by many as the godfather of primitive skills revival. I wonât go into too much detail, but this book served as the distillation of the knowledge he and his students have gathered putting much of what was learned into the field and practiced thoroughly. There are several facets to know before reading and practicing the contents of this book. While much of the techniques of trapping, weaving, firestarting, cordmaking, etc. are universal, Olsen primarily writes in the context of the Great Basin region stretching from Northern California to eastern Utah, southern Idaho, northern Arizona, and pretty much all of Nevada. He picks up skills from the Shoshone and Paiute native peoples, and much of the information about plants and animals is written for this area. Those beyond this geographical range will still find useful tricks, but find the information on these two subjects of flora and fauna lacking. If this is the case for you, I recommend looking into local field guides for your area as supplemental material for this book.If you DO live in this area, you have hit the jackpot. This is an amazing reference and guide for surviving with your bare hands in this natural region. Additionally, I have read earlier editions of this book and find the latest 2021 edition by far the best. Usually the case is that newer books tend to âdumb downâ their content to approach a wider audience, but not at all the case here. The photos are glorious, plant identification is so much better organized, and everything receives a marvelous facelift while giving the original information from Olsen the respect it deserves. If you are interested in primitive or minimalist survival techniques or the lifestyle of aboriginal humans in the Great Basin geographical area, look no further than this book.
