Fun, Educational, VERY Challenging!
This book has a broad range of phonics-based activities, I am very impressed by how many different things it contains. Many of the activities such as âMelting C and Gâ and âSilent Eâsâ are perfect for young children. I do think this book may go over many young kidsâ heads, pages about diphthongs and phonological awareness are very high level. It seems to have an awkward blend of simple and advanced activities. I do think the pages near the back with the alphabet are very fun. I would consider making this one book into two separate books, one for early learners and another for more advanced kids.

Definitely a useful workbook for the advanced child. Alot of pages and activities to conplete. It’s best if your child can write to do the activities, however i started just reading some of the activities with my daughter so when she is able to complete them she already understands the activity. There is also a coloring section in the back of the book with the Abcs and words and pictures to go along with it. We started there as i would suggest most parents do if you have a beginner. Great buy!

This was a challenging, yet fun activity book that my boys have loved! Itâs challenging enough to get their brains working, but not too hard as to cause them to throw in the towel. Great activity book for the cold winter months rounding the corner!

I like this workbook, my son enjoys it too. He likes doing school exercises, so I try to load him up with them while I can get him to embrace the work.I think the reason I gave it 4 vs 5 stars is that it’s very wordy for a book for this age range. Kids want fun activity books. This is more wordy than his school worksheets.

This book contains wonderful activities designed to help kids learn to read and get comfortable with words. It provides extra practice for a lot of topics kids cover in school.

2.5 stars. Good for extra practice, but definitely not on its own
I really wanted to love this book, but I don’t. As a former elementary school teacher, I’ve had plenty of training in how to teach phonics and I’ve done it before. The nice thing is, this book covers most of the phoncis rules, even ones you don’t typically learn til 2nd or 3rd grade or later. The bad part is, it does it all in 80 pages, so there’s only 1-4 pages practice at the most on skills. Many key skills like the sounds letters make and how to read simple words are glossed over or only given a page or two. The organization of the skills is also super wacky. You go from putting words together to double consonants to completing short words to hard and soft c and g to long and short vowels to weird y to identifying vowels and filling them in to bossy r to cvc words and so on. Hard skills and simple skills are distributed randomly with no real thought to the way they should be taught to kids. In fact, phonemic awareness and rhyming words (usually taught first, before even teaching letter names and such) isn’t even covered until page 70, after diphthongs, diagraphs, silent letters, bossy r, and more. Additionally, some skills like syllables and even vowels vs consonants are just described in one long page with no practice for kids. I could never use this book in order to successfully teach a child phonics.Now, that being said, the activities are good activities that you could use out of order to give extra practice to a child, but it’s definitely not a good resource if you’re not sure how to teach phonics and don’t have much else to go by. I do like the activities and think they are good on their own. They’re just not organized well and there needs to be more if they’re going to cover so many skills.Additionally, pages 82-110 are all just coloring pages, one each with a letter and corresponding animal/picture. And everything after that is an answer key for the activities. So it’s really just 80 pages of practice, not 120 like it first appears.
