Great book from a great runner and coach
There are some many complicated running books out there in the world. All trying to re-invent the wheel. This does a really nice job of laying out a normal weekly rhythm to maintain if you want to race well.Running is all about consistent training, but being able to recover while you do it. Mark puts together very elegant schedules that basically have 2 to 3 days harder, followed by a day easy to reset the body and be able to do it again. The workouts are no frills, classic workouts that college coaches and professional coaches have used for years to get results. All while making sure you’re hitting every specific intensity zone in each week.I love how transparent this book is, about doubling, about what his pro athletes do. All of the do’s and all of the don’ts. This is the book the modern running world needed, and it explains part of the reason why the NCAA has gotten so much faster these last few years… Because good training is now easily accessible thanks to books like this. Thanks Mark, I can honestly say this book helped me break 15 minutes in the 5k.

Amazing read- One of my favorite books.
I loved this book. Great subject matter by a great author and well edited. The joy of sport and thoughtful approach that Coach Coogan brings to his teams and this book translates easily to building any team, any business and a better relationship with anyone. The people first approach clearly has generated success. The first seven or eight chapters are, at their essence, a management book, far more readable than Peter Drucker. Book length is appropriate to topic which is a treat, much of what I have read lately tends towards too much repeating of the same themes. Thanks to the author and editors. On a personal level the book resonates over and over again. As a high school and college runner, I too tried to make every run an A + effort often limiting relatively successful racing to after I was forced to take a few days off or was sick. Count this as number one of things I wish I had figured out when younger. Hopefully Mark’s candor on this will be received by many a youthful runner, easier to digest this lesson from someone with a distinguished background. The “play well with others rule” and you have to be a good team mate first also rings true whether a family, a business or any other endeavor. I coach youth track and try to instill the lessons from the book as the messages all lead to a happier and meaningful life regardless of level of racing success. The training programs are very clear for those that are racing.I also loved the anecdotes, its a great service to see exceptional athletes have the same problems/vulnerability/occasional loss of joy and purpose as the rest of us.I plan to buy and share copies with friends, not just runners.Great Book!

Excellent Running Book!
Not only does Mark give the reader excellent plans for training for any distance, he also conveys his own personal experiences (which are extraordinary and very motivational!) and discusses the mental aspect of racing, for those that really want to excel. Mark also provides numerous pages related to maintaining strength and flexibility, and the benefits of a healthy diet. Great read, and nice manual to refer back to.

Great Information – And a Fun Read Too
Best training book I’ve ever read. Coach Coogan’s guidelines, tips, and training plans are well explained and easily implementable by “regular” runners like me, not just his stable of thoroughbreds. Even though I’m a lifelong runner, I learned a ton. One thing that sets it apart from other “instruction manual” books on running is that it’s written in a lively style with plenty of humor — so it’s an engaging and fun read.

Great insight for runners of all levels
It’s not often that you get an elite runner to offer tips in his sport that are easy to understand. Mark does a great job of simplifying a plan to allow runners of all levels of ability improve and enjoy the sport. Highly recommend.

Great resource!
I have been a coach for many years now and always interested and looking to continue to learn. Coogan’s book is super informative while also telling the more personal side of running and racing. Will keep this book on my desk as a resource for sure!
A Reader –
Only for advanced runners
Whoever said this book is for all levels was wrong. Iâm returning it. Unless youâre prepared to run 45 miles a week youâre not ready for this book. 2/3 of the book is the training programs. Day 1 of the first 1 mile training program has you running 6-8 miles. Iâd say all the programs are for college or serious experienced runners. Not for the average Jane or Joe whoâs just starting out or has been running for a while without a coach looking for tips to get better.

This Book is Fantastic
I can use this book to train at any level. I am a high school coach and I have athletes that will benefit from the information in this book! Whatever level of running you are into, read this book. It is worth the read!

This book is actually an excellent write up of training principles that apply across distances, very well written and one of the best training books I have ever read. Unfortunately though, when on the kindle (app or web version) the training schedules are unreadable. Opt for the print version.
