The Only Book About Distance Training You Will Ever Need
After I finished reading Run Elite, by Andrew Snow, I was overwhelmed with a feeling of sadness and loss. Donât get me wrong, the book is brilliant. The sadness and loss I was feeling was for my missed opportunity to put the lessons of the book to use when I was in my running prime. I have been searching for this book for nearly my entire running life of over 50 years â and now it shows up when Iâm 69!? But, as Andrew says, if I âabsorb the materialâ in the book, I âwill have the best running years of [my] life ahead.â
I believe that.
I have long known that the âcookie cutter training plans that you can print out and put on your fridgeâ were not the way to go. And, of course there are many great books out there about training, but few of us have the time or ability to study what makes an elite runner elite and then distill that into a digestible, logical, and inspirational individualized plan. Andrew makes that possible. In particular, I appreciated how Andrew explored some of the major myths that have long populated training literature and then proceeded to explode them with empirical evidence and logic.
Andrew has done the fundamental work for us by defining the necessary mindset needed to commit and achieve, and identifying the physiological truths about training. No matter how young or old you are, or whether you are a beginner barely able to run a 5k or an elite racer, I believe that absorbing and then implementing the lessons in Run Elite is sure to significantly improve your running.
As always, doing the work is up to you, but if you are looking for a fantastic and understandable way to be the best you can be, read Run Elite.

Excellent Running Book
This is a very well written book on running and would recommend this book to anyone who loves reading about running but it doesnât include specific race training plans like most other running books. It does give the key principles of each phrase and guidelines for setting up a training plan. I would have liked to see plans for different distances to see how they differ from each other.
I discovered this book by watching Andrew Snowâs YouTube channel. You can tell he is very passionate and knowledgeable about all aspects of running. Iâve learned a lot of new things from just watching his YouTube videos. I really enjoyed reading the stories of elite runners from Olympic sprinters (Michael Johnson) to marathoners (Eliud Kipchoge). These stories alone are inspiring and can lead you to read more about these amazing runners. I donât recall reading another running book that focuses so much on how mindset can affect your running performance. There are some great advice on how to change your mindset.
The concept of the triphasic model isnât something Iâd heard of before. Iâm really excited to try out the different phases and see what Iâm capable of.

Game changer
I started listening to the audio version of the book but found it so valuable I had to get the hard copy as well. I used the principles described in Andrew’s book to develop a training plan. I had been trying to get a sub-3 marathon for the last 3 years but was stuck around 3:05-3:10. I was finally able to do 2:57 a few weeks back after a 16 week training block based on Run Elite. I had a really bad back injury earlier in the year as well and Andrew’s approach helped me prioritize recovery, building a solid base and feel stronger than ever. I was able to build higher volume than I’ve ever had in the past 15 years of running, while staying healthy and finally getting to sub-3 at a ripe age of 40! Highly recommend the book!

Another great book for half or full marathon training
Enjoyed reading this book. The training system, although it advocates for easy running for majority of the time, encourages you to also do strides regularly. This has a crossover to other books Iâve read where when building a base of easy running, itâs good practice to include some short fast running like strides or/and short sprints. So that you are also stimulating (not ignoring) your fast twitch and developing reactivity, not just slow twitch.
I like how the system (tryphasic model as itâs called in the book) is organised in a 6 week block fashion namely base training, support training and specific training. Itâs very systematic that allows the runner a good ample time to really train and develop all the muscle fibres necessary to come fully prepared for a half or full marathon race. The system comes with a table of paces as guidance that the reader can refer to when doing a specific session. It also has training schedule examples.
As for the nutrition part, I am not sold on the raw food aspect. For sports specific dietetics and nutrition, there are other better sources from sports nutritionist and dietitian who are better qualified when giving advice on this very topic. Apart from that, itâs a great book with a great training system that Iâm quite excited to try.

Iâll let the figures tell my story. Iâm 50 y.o. I started running at 45, after decades of being a sedentary man and a heavy smoker. July 2023, San Francisco Marathon: 3:39. I got there by myself, after a long sustained effort, and I thought I was about to reach my limits. Then I got this book, just released at that moment. November 2023, Mt. Fuji Marathon: 3:33… Hm, so a sub 3:30 seemed feasible. April 2024, Puerto Vallarta Marathon: 3:26. September 2024, Berlin Marathon: 3:18 -that’s my current PB, and thatâs already a BQ-â¦Thereâs no trick and no secret, but a diligent implementation of the Triphasic Model. The deep knowledge that Andrew delivers in his book will help you to understand how your mind and your body can work together (and not against each other), so that you can structure the right training method for your own particular body and shift your mindset to become the best runner you can be. Right now, Iâm certain that a sub 3 hours is within my reach: I already found out the way with this book, and I just need to run through the path with joy and patience. Come along!

Andrew did an amazing job of sharing his experience in running and training. He is very knowledgeable and shared the benefits from training like elite runners.
The Triphasic model helps build confidence and take the uncertainty out of your training
I learned how important mindset and diet (BMI) is to your running results.
Iâm sharing his materials with my running group and everyone is loving it. In addition, he provides a number of tools that can be incorporated into your running now.
Thanks Andrew!

My chance of being an Elite runner would have died about 40 yearâs ago, this doesnât mean I donât have any goals. This book inspired me to change my whole outlook on running, training and Mindset, I know longer think I can do those runs, I know I can.
Thank you Andrew

This book is fantastic. Before I bought my copy I checked out the reviews and felt confident that it was a book worth having and now as I have it, it definitely is – I also have it on Audible as well as the hard copy, they actually complement each other. I listened to most of this on audible whilst travelling or having some downtime (on X 0.9 because the author and narrator, Andrew Snow’s enthusiasm to pass on his knowledge means that he reads quite fast). On audible there’s a few extra nuggets of info and there’s also a link to the visuals on PDF.
It’s a very motivating read and many people might wish that this kind of book was out years ago, I know I did. The great thing about this book is that as you go along your mind can wander with questions and ideas and the even greater thing is that Andrew goes on to explain how these thoughts and ideas work, why they work, who has made them work, what changes they made to make them work and the result they got from the work they put in to make it work.
Diet is mentioned, and as someone already invested in that area, it was reassuring to find out that I’m already on the right road.
There are many different ways to approach your training, physically and mentally and it is likely that you will identify with a particular athlete, or a couple of athletes or a system that will motivate you to make some positive changes to your running and maybe even to your life.
I’ve read a good few books over the years on training but this is likely to be the only book that I’ve read cover to cover in a couple of days (and listened to) because it’s not just informative, it’s a compelling read.
